Lily Tomlin will receive the 53rd SAG Lifetime Achievement Award for a career spanning drama, comedy, feminism and animal rights efforts this January. The award joins Tomlin’s arsenal of accomplishments including six Emmys, a Tony for each of her one-woman Broadway shows and a nearly six decade-long career of writing for and starring in content for the big screen, small screen and the much smaller screens her home streamer Netflix reaches.

The President of SAG praised Tomlin’s distinctly human and eccentric characters. Those characters have been a staple in her wheelhouse dating all the way back to 1972 with the release of her Grammy-winning sketch comedy album “This is a Recording”. Tomlin starred as an aggressive, acerbic telephone operator and the album reached #15 on the Billboard Hot 200 Albums list, the highest-reaching solo comedy album from a woman to ever make the chart. Tomlin’s characters weren’t limited to adult content; as the voice of Ms. Frizzle in “The Magic School Bus” and the philosophical toddler Edith Ann, she consistently included audiences of all-ages in her comedy.
While there’s no concrete award for it, Tomlin was also one of the first female comedians to break gender barriers by appearing in male drag as her characters Tommy Velour and Rick. Tomlin’s also worked closely with animal activists particularly for the relocation of captive elephants onto sanctuaries. Her upcoming app for children, City Adventures of Edith Ann, will test the waters for a future generation of Tomlin fans.

The 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be televised on TNT and TBS January 29th from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California.
