JFL Update: Son of a Critch Panel

Marty Younge is a Toronto based comedy journalist and a fan of all things stand up comedy. The final 24 hours of Just for Laughs, such a fatigue washes over me that if i were anywhere else in the world, this would be a night in.  I laugh to myself in the elevator of my hotel about how this is not even an option.

Some of the most important players in the Canadian industry have gathered to attend a panel with the cast and crew of Son of a Critch.  It’s a prequel coming of age show adapted from beloved Newfound comic and long time “This Hour Has 22 Minutes” cast member Mark Critch. The show is produced by Project 10 productions and all you really need to know, is that they were behind Schitt’s Creek and The Kids in the Hall revival.

The Panel featured Mark Critch, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, Claire Rankin and the reason I didn’t drink the night before– Malcolm McDowell.  What a hidden gem moment to see such an iconic star chatting casually at 12:00 about shooting in Newfoundland and how special it was to play a Grandpa. It was surreal and after all those years– that voice from “A Clockwork Orange” is unmistakable.  Canada’s top film critic and proud east coaster Richard Crouse knew exactly how to moderate the panel, bringing out heart warming casual anecdotes that made the conference room feel like a sunny Newfoundland Kitchen. You could see the cast was truly bonded in the way Critch and McDowell– who play in-laws on the show– were bantering about an overly friendly watch maker during filming.

Malcom McDowell posed for a Polaroid after and I certainly will treasure it always.

It was a quite a gathering early in the day that reminded anyone who was paying attention Canada is a force in the comedy world.
