James Corden’s Drop the Mic Will Stand On Its Own on TBS

While rap gasped its final dying breath, TBS ordered sixteen episodes straight to series of a celebrity rap battle segment from “The Late Late Show with James Corden”. One of Corden’s musical segments has already gone viral and the network is now banking on another favorite from the show to also cash in on. “Drop the Mic”, a bit hosted by Reggie Watts in which celebrities rap battle one another, usually with one celebrity standing stoically as their rival celeb craps on their appearance or career.
Celebrities and lip-syncing have become a weird, new cash cow, but whether the same stars singing, or shouting, original lyrics will be a success has yet to be seen. One of the main appeals from Corden’s hugely popular “Carpool Karaoke” was the accessibility of seeing stars having fun together. Audiences that like watching people singing together may or may not be as into David Schwimmer taking a verbal shit on James Corden’s weight.
The show is TBS’ first venture into unscripted television since gaining a new Senior VP (Michael Bloom), although calling the series unscripted is generous. The celebrities presumably have some kind of writing team preparing them for the rap battle, unless Anne Hathaway really is a secretly great freestyle rapper.
