Jamie Lee Shares the Craziest Thing She’s Learned on 10 Things…So Far

Jamie Lee

Between appearing on Girl Code, multiple late night stand-up appearances and writing for The Pete Holmes Show, Jamie Lee is no stranger to how television works. But a few things have surprised her about her new truTV series 10 Things with Jamie Lee. For one, the warm reception it’s received from fans online, “It’s been so positive, I’m starting to think everyone is just fucking with me.” Another thing that Jamie didn’t anticipate was, “unlike Girl Code, this is a more full body shot, so I became hyper aware of what I do with my hands, almost to the point where they are these things attached to my body that I just have to make sure I move around. That was one thing that I never knew, that not moving your hands makes the audience less engaged. I mean, the network had opinions on my hands! Not the look of them, not ‘Put on more rings!’ but straight up, ‘Find an activity for them….not masturbating.’”

10 Things is fun trip down the WTF rabbit hole that mixes elements of a classic countdown show, Ripley’s Believe it or Not, and Buzzfeed lists to share a weekly dose of the odd and almost unbelievable in sex, sports, marketing, laws and more. So most of the biggest surprises have come from the lists, themselves.

I learned there are guys who schedule vasectomies during March Madness so they can justify taking days off to watch the game. I was horrified, but it’s also so interesting.

“We have a sports episode coming up and I literally know nothing about sports, almost to the point like ‘What’s a ball?’ So this particular episode is not only educating the audience, it’s educating the host! And I learned there are guys who schedule vasectomies during March Madness so they can justify taking days off to watch the game. I was horrified, but it’s also so interesting. I think that’s what I like about the show, some lists when I heard the topic, like the sports thing, it’s like ‘ulch, how am I going to care about ten things on this subject?’ But our writers do such a great job of making the facts so interesting and bizarre that no matter what list it is, I think there’s something for everyone in it. And that’s thanks to our writers, our researchers, it really takes a village to make this show, plus it’s checks and balances to find out if it’s something people actually already know about.”

When not worrying about where to put her hands while discussing cleverly timed elective surgery, Jamie is busy planning her wedding and writing a book about the experience. But don’t worry, she’s not burning the candle at both ends. “I usually poop out pretty hard by about 9 pm unless I have a stand-up show. My fiance makes fun of me because I love mornings. The morning just always makes me feel refueled, that this is a new day and you get a clean slate. Basically I’m living Memento, is what I’m saying.”

Though she’s been living in LA for many years now, Jamie is still a New Yorker at heart, her family is there, it’s where she spent her formative years as a struggling comedian and she loves the culture. “When people say, ‘How dare you make fun of the [LA] culture, I’m like, ‘What culture?’ I think LA is boring, really. This is the most man-made lake feeling city. There is this whole group of New Yorkers who enjoy commiserating in a funny way about LA. New York is sort of in our hearts and LA is just in our panties. But everyone outside that group gets really offended when you shit on LA, it’s too real for people. They really want to believe this is the promised land where all your dreams come true.”

“Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy living here.” Jamie adds, sidestepping the age old NY vs LA fued, “I do like going to Santa Monica, you can ride your bike all the way up to Malibu, it’s a really amazing ride. I also got engaged on that bike ride, but that’s not why I like it.”

10 Things airs on TruTV every Tuesday at 10:30 pm.
