Who is On Late Night Tonight in Comedy: Week of January 7, 2019

Who’s on Late Night Tonight in Comedy?

Although the government shut-down continues, the late night shut-down is finally over! Our late night hosts are coming back to work after their holiday break with plenty of new shows, new content and new comedy guests booked this week. Also, we are getting closer to the date recently announce by TBS for the return of “Conan” starring Conan O’Brien. After going on the road with his own “Team Coco Presents Conan & Friends: An Evening of Stand-Up and Investment Tips” tour during the fall, Conan has been working on reformatting his show into a new half-hour series which will debut Tuesday, January 22nd at 11pm on TBS.

So while we wait for Conan to return, here’s some comedy highlights for this week in late night.

With this week’s late night highlights, we’re going to jump ahead to Wednesday night when Kevin Hart appears on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Even thought Hart will appear on the Late Show to promote his new film “The Upside“, a comedy co-starring Bryan Cranston which features Kevin Hart’s most dramatic role to date, the conversation will definitely involve the Oscars. Will he host? Won’t he host? It still feels up in the air to the public after Kevin Hart’s appearance on “Ellen” last week where former Academy Awards host Ellen DeGeneres announced that she had taken it upon herself to dial up the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to hopefully get Kevin reinstated as the host of this year’s ceremony. Kevin Hart’s “Ellen” appearance led to an even bigger discussion about the superstar comedian’s homophobic tweets and routines from years ago which reappeared and torpedoed his opportunity to host the biggest awards night of the year, when CNN’s Don Lemon took on the topic. Expect Colbert to be gentle when dealing with Hart about what some on social media are calling his non-apology, but also expect the Late Show host to keep digging for answers and to give Kevin Hart plenty of room to answer back to the situation.

Our coverage of these latest developments includes two articles available on the IBang, “The Oscars Still Want Kevin Hart, According to Ellen” and “Don Lemon’s Powerful Discussion Has Kevin Hart Talking About Growth” which we invite you to check out for a fuller understanding of what’s happening with Kevin Hart and the Academy Awards.

After Stephen Colbert’s interview with Kevin Hart on Wednesday, just keep your TV on CBS for the national late night television debut of Mekki Leeper on the Late Late Show with James Corden. Mekki is a Los Angeles comic by way of Philadelphia, PA and was named one of this past year’s New Faces of Comedy 2018 at the Just For Laughs festival in Montreal. He’s also been appearing at other festivals around the U.S. and wrote for the 2017 White House Correspondents’ Dinner hosted by Hasan Minhaj.

Going back to Monday on the schedule, it starts off strong with one of the best late night guests there is no matter which host books him, Jon Glaser. Maybe best known as “Neon Joe, Werewolf Hunter” along with writing and appearances on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien“, “Inside Amy Schumer” and MTV’s “Human Giant“, Jon Glaser always brings a spectacle with him when he’s a late night guest. Tune in Monday night to see what he has in store for Stephen Colbert when he appears on the Late Show.

On Tuesday, you can see what it was like to host the Golden Globe Awards when Andy Samberg stops by the Tonight Show. Also on Tuesday, Keegan-Michael Key is on the Late Show. With all the politically-charged humor that Stephen Colbert does, we’re wondering if former President Barack Obama’s Anger Translator, Luther be making a Late Show appearance as well?

And there’s some good news for weekend late nights. NBC has announced that Saturday Night Live will return live coast-to-coast from its mid-season hiatus on Saturday, January 19th. And SNL has announced that the first host of 2019 will be Rachel Brosnahan, the star of the award winning, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” on Amazon Prime. This will be the first of the last 12 episodes of SNL – Season 44.

Have a great week and keep staying up late.
