Triumph the Insult Comic Dog Confronts Ted Cruz in Texas

Stephen Colbert borrowed an old dog with new tricks from his buddy Conan O’Brien. He sent Triumph the Insult Comic Dog to Texas to cover the highly contentious senate race between Beto O’Rourke and Triumph’s dream interview, Ted Cruz. The piece aired last night on Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Triumph went native, adding a cowboy hat to his signature cigar look, as he interviewed the Beto heads first, before moving on to Cruz supporters. He got to speak with D candidate Beto O’Rourke as well as voters on both sides, but the real money shot here is Triumph (and his behind the scenes best friend Robert Smigel) making Ted Cruz’s team very nervous with a face to face.

“Welcome to Texas,” Cruz said to Triumph who asked back if he could make a few jokes without Ted’s security attacking him. “That depends on the jokes,” Ted said as some very tense security guards looked on. Is there anything funnier than seeing Cruz’s security hold an arm out to hold back a dog puppet from getting too close? Maybe hearing a Cruz supporter shout “talk to your supporters not him!” in the background.

Cruz did have a few things to say to Triumph. As a Cuban American, he said anyone smoking a Cuban cigar can’t be all that bad, and then he suggested that Triumph just “walk away” pointing out that its democrats who make dogs get fixed. Triumph said he actually supports spaying and neutering– “Just like Trump did to you” before getting a a crowd of Ted’s supporters to chant “lying Ted Cruz.”

Outdogged Cruz.
