Three New HBO Comedy Series Tackle Very Different Types Of Relationships

HBO has just released a trailer for a brand new half hour comedy series Insecure. The series stars Issa Rae who you may remember was featured by the New York Times last year as an up and coming comedic voice using stand up comedy to address race issues in America. Issa made her mark with the web series and book, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl. The new half-hour comedy series which also stars Yvonne Orji, Jay Ellis and Lisa Joyce, looks at the friendship of two black women and their uncomfortable experiences at work with friends and in relationships. Larry Wilmore serves as a consultant to the series and helped write the pilot. The trailer looks original and a departure from the focus on middle aged white couples we’ve seen in new comedies for the past year.

High Maintenance follows a Brooklyn pot dealer and his neurotic “clients.” Ben Sinclair is “The Guy” who provides his eccentric buyers with an important service. The series started as a web series released through Vimeo from 2012 through 2015. Sinclair co-created and wrote the series with his wife Katja Blichfeld. You can binge-watch the first 19 episodes on Vimeo, soon to be available on HBO Go.

Sarah Jessica Parker is also back on HBO with a new half hour comedy series that’s got a very different tone from the girl-centric massive hit Sex and the City. Divorce stars SJP as Frances, a woman who makes a clean break from her shitty marriage after finding out her husband is having an emotional affair and has grown an awful mustache. Thomas Haden Church, Molly Shannon, Talia Balsam, Tracy Letts, Sterling Jerins and Charlie Kilgore co-star in the series created by Sharon Horgan.
