The Bocchetti Files: An Exclusive Interview With Colin Quinn
Our newest column, The Bocchetti Files, features comedian Mike Bocchetti talking one-on-one with his friends and fellow comedians about whatever crosses his mind. For his first two interviews he spoke with comedian Dave Hill, and Family Guy writer and comedian Alec Sulkin. This week, Mike talked with Colin Quinn. Most recently, Colin has released the critically acclaimed web series Cop Show, and Colin also has a book coming out in June, The Coloring Book: A Comedian Solves Race Relations in America. Colin’s one man shows Colin Quinn: An Irish Wake, Long Story Short, and Unconstitutional have all received rave reviews from both critics and fans. Mike chose Colin to interview for his series because Mike has been a huge fan of Colin’s since Remote Control, and he says that he admires that Colin is a major risk taker and icon.
Mike Bocchetti: Colin, when was the first time you went on stage and how did it go?
Colin Quinn: First time I went on stage I bombed. But the emcee (Chris Blitman) came over to me and said “You’re a natural. Come back in a year”.
Mike Bocchetti: You have done it all– TV, movies, one person shows, SNL– now you’re doing your own WebSeries “Cop Show” for Lexus. How much different is that from other things you’ve done?
Colin Quinn: Doing a web series is different because you don’t have any network notes, so you get a lot more freedom. The other side of that is when it’s not funny there’s no one to blame but yourself. But ultimately it’s great. Except for the money. Oh yeah. I forgot. You don’t make any money.
Mike Bocchetti: In this age of political correctness how are you dealing with this in your comedy?
Colin Quinn: Political correctness is one of those things that we just have to work around. It’s so ingrained in people now that they think they’re not being politically correct when they are. So it’s a weird situation. But maybe there’s a backlash against it?
Mike Bocchetti: Colin, what has your favorite moment in comedy been?
Colin Quinn: My favorite moment in comedy is hard to say. It’s constant. Any time you have a new bit that works you get that high. That’s why we keep doing it, yes?
Mike Bocchetti: Now that we are both in the age of the ‘net, Facebook, Twitter etc, how have you embraced it and how much has it helped you?
Colin Quinn: I am on twitter a lot, it’s always fun. I don’t know if it helps or not but it’s fun to be on. You get to realize there’s a lot of other people out there who are funny who aren’t comics. Also a lot of psychos.
Mike Bocchetti: Where do you see your self 5 years from now in comedy..?
Colin Quinn: 5 years from now I see myself working at a comedy club trying not to cut my throat during the check spot.
