Ever since she can remember, Iliza Shlesinger knew that comedy would be a major part of her future. “It was a given, like you’re going to get old one day. It’s something you just always know,” Shlesinger said in an interview with The Interrobang. “My parents were funny, and I always wanted to be funny. A few years ago, anyone paying attention to the stand-up scene in Los Angeles would have been within their rights to think that the clubs were aging dinosaurs, sinking slowly to their death in a tar pit they’d never be able to escape. The Big Three (The Comedy Store, the Improv and the Laugh Factory) were not having their better days and it seemed like everything they did to get unstuck just made them sink deeper and deeper. But today, business is booming, with the clubs drawing stronger audiences to watch a broader range of comedians and really reasserting their relevance in comedy and pop culture.

Whitney Cummings returns to stand-up with her new special, “Whitney Cummings: I Love You” premiering on Comedy Central on Saturday, June 28 at 11:00 p.m. ET/PT. Her second one-hour Comedy Central special was taped at the Barclay Theatre in Irvine, CA.
