Samantha Bee Addresses The Cunt Thing: “I’m a comedian”

Tonight Samantha Bee returned to the air with an all-new episode of Full Frontal. As might be expected, she apologized but she maintained her Samantha Bee-ness with her apology and didn’t really apologize to Ivanka Trump. She apologized for offending people (well, women), for distracting from the real issue, and she apologized for adding to the nightmarish 24-hour news cycles. She also pointed out that she is a comedian, and therefore not someone who America should be looking to for “civility.”

The statement began with an apology for using a word that offended people. She explained that she uses the word frequently on the show hoping to reclaim it, but said that in using it as an insult, she crossed a line. “I regret it and I do apologize for that.” She was particularly sorry to the women who have had the c-word hurled at them during some of the worst moments of their lives and who might not want to reclaim it. “I never intended it to hurt anyone,” she said, “except Ted Cruz.”

As for the men who were upset with her, she had thoughts for them as well. “Many men were also offended by my use of the word…I do not care about that.” But what she did seem to care about is that she distracted from the important issue she was trying to address, and that she “did something to contribute to the nightmare of 24 hour news cycles that we’re all white knuckling through.”

To those who claim to be worried about the death of civility, she suggested they look elsewhere. “I’m a comedian. People who hone their voices in basement bars while yelling back at drunk hecklers are definitely not paragons of civility,” she said, adding, “But you know what? Civility is just nice words. Maybe we should all worry a little bit more about the niceness of our actions.”

In other words, sorry, not sorry. You can watch the full statement below.
