When Prince Picked a Cinderella: A Small Town Girl Remembers The Night She Was Invited into Prince’s World

Everything about Prince was magical, other wordly and unique. A young girl, from a small town experienced the magical world of Prince first hand in a grown up version of a real Cinderella story back in the 90’s. On Friday, she called in to SiriusXM’s flagship comedy show, Bennington, and shared an amazing story about the night Prince picked her out of a crowd and welcomed a small town girl into his inner world.
It was in the early 90’s and Julie was a small town girl from Oklahoma who was in college and on a trip out to Los Angeles. She and her friend Brenda Lee went to Bar One on Sunset Boulevard. They were in the door less than 5 minutes when Julie was approached by a man who said “my friend would like to dance with you.” That friend turned out to be Prince, and that dance turned into a years long friendship with the artist, and an entree into his inner world.
She described the night and watching a wall of bodyguards part to welcome her to sit down next to Prince in a red velvet banquette before dancing with him to his own soundtrack. She would later be invited into his limo- she was told “Prince wants to feed you”- and they went to eat pancakes. The friendship continued for years as she became a handpicked member of his posse that included “kind people” who didn’t want anything from him. She described wild fun impromptu parties where with no notice you’d get a call, and a limo would drive you inside a warehouse, close the doors behind, and the new power generation would be jamming at 3am. ”
She described Prince as shy with a wicked sense of humor. “He was funny,he was real, and he was bizarre but not in a harmful way.” The friendship trailed off years later when he invited her to move to Los Angeles and help him with Grand Slam, but she decided to stay in college on the advice of her family.
“It was the memory of a lifetime,” she said. It’s like electricity going through your body to experience something so creative and special and authentic, and something that nobody else gets to see.”
