Larry Wilmore to Host New Podcast on The Ringer Podcast Network Starting May 11th

Larry Wilmore is a busy guy. The prolific writer and producer, who is currently involved with the production of the shows Insecure and Black-ish, can now add another title to his resume: Podcaster. It was announced today that Wilmore will be hosting a new show, called Larry Wilmore: Black on the Air, on Bill Simmons’ The Ringer Podcast Network. The show’s focus appears to be wide ranging, with legendary TV writer/producer Norman Lear scheduled as the first guest, and future guests like Neil deGrasse Tyson and Bernie Sanders already announced. The first episode is set to drop on May 11th; In the meantime, you can check out a teaser for the show here.

“Even as a kid, casting pods was something I could only dream of, and now it’s here,” joked Wilmore of the news. The Ringer founder Bill Simmons, formerly of ESPN, added that Wilmore is “one of the best thinkers and fearless voices we have,” and that “it makes perfect sense for Larry to become the 22,354,919th human being with a podcast.”

With Wilmore’s pedigree, the host should have plenty of things to talk about. Wilmore is a renowned comedy writer, having won an Emmy and Peabody Award for The Bernie Mac Show, which he created and wrote. He’s had a hand in writing and producing shows like In Living Color, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Sister, Sister, and the more recent Insecure on HBO, which he co-created with star Issa Rae. For years, he was the Senior Black Correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, a role which eventually led to him hosting his own nightly news show, called The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore. Last year, he even had the honor of hosting the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. All of this is to say that Wilmore is a smart, funny guy who has no shortage of interesting stories from his years in the industry, so this new show has a lot of promise.
