Bill Cosby Twitter Breaks Month Long Silence To Announce Circuit Court Victory in Defamation Case

i

It’s been just about a month since the Bill Cosby Twitter account last sent out a message. The post announced the “dismissal of case against Bill Cosby affirmed by First Circuit Court of Appeals” and linked to a Facebook post and linked to a press release from Cosby’s attorneys that announced the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit affirming a lower Boston District Court ruling dismissing the defamation case against Cosby brought by actress Katherine McKee.

The defamation case stemmed from a letter Cosby had written to the New York Daily News in 2014, shortly after allegations against Cosby became known to the general public. Cosby’s letter called McKee’s allegations against him “malicious” and “lacking in credibility,” and was critical of how the media had handled accusations against the comedian.

McKee contended that Cosby’s allegations in that letter were false and rose to the level of defamation, but both the District and Appeals courts disagreed, dismissing McKee’s case. The letter, according to the courts, was protected by the First Amendment.

Cosby’s letter was in response to McKee’s assertions that Cosby raped her in 1974 in Detroit. She was one of dozens of women who accused Cosby of rape or other sexual misconduct.

Cosby’s last tweet prior to today’s was to congratulate his own show- The Cosby Show on its 33rd anniversary.
