Biological Father of Adopted Cherokee Child Arrested
Dusten Brown, the biological father of “Baby Veronica,” won custody at the end of 2011 after he objected to her adoption (the law that presided over the custody decision was the 1978 Indian Child Welfare Act, which focuses on keeping Indian children from being placed with non-Indian adoptive or foster parents). After Veronica’s adoptive parents appealed to the Supreme Court, the lower courts reversed the ruling and Brown didn’t produce Veronica at the court-ordered transitional meeting. He was arrested and Veronica was ordered back to her adoptive parents, who are saving up for the years of therapy they’ll eventually need for this girl.
