The 5: Five Fabulous Times Talk Shows Got Awkward

Comedian Tyler Richardson moved to New York City after years in Washington D.C. and quickly began performing in the city’s most popular clubs and shows. He’s got not one but two live shows that are takes on the late night talk show format, and in celebration of his upcoming shows, Tyler put together this week’s “The 5.”  Staying with the late night theme, Tyler picked five times that talk shows got awkward– well four times talk shows got awkward and one that’s just a favorite.  The Tyler Richardson Show is a new monthly late night talk show at New York Comedy Club with guests, extraordinary stories, comics, and more and it will be live streamed on Facebook and it all happens at 7pm on January 23. Tickets available at newyorkcomedyclub.com/calendar.  “Goodnight, New York?” hits the stage at Stand Up New York on January 25 at 10:15, with co-anchors Nathan Macintosh and Tyler Richardson plus Katie Hannigan, Tim Dillon, Hadiyah Robinson, and Monroe Martin. Go to standupnyc.laughstub.com for tickets. And now, on to The 5

1. David Letterman Interviewing Madonna

When the first F-bomb gets dropped, we may forget that this is on CBS. By the next curse word, Letterman feels the need to remind us and Madonna, this is on broadcast television. Panties to sniff? Madonna may be 58 now, but she was 36 and full of teenage angst. Tit for tat with the hair jabs, and both seem to be enjoying themselves very much. There’s almost something uncomfortable in the air, but that’s what people expect from Madonna. It’s a raw and honest chat.

2. Geraldo Rivera Gets Nose Broken During a Brawl with Nazis

Sure, a lot of things can go wrong when people start fighting. You may drop your nachos to get a better look. Having a hateful element like Nazis, or skinheads, on a program is bound to generate a very aggressive atmosphere. But, when a white man calls a black man an Uncle Tom, things can get explosive. Some say this moment helped make Geraldo a star. It’s certainly hard to look away when all the fists start flying. Violence is never the answer kids, but when you have guests of this nature, we’re all secretly hoping for a fight.

3. Slow Jam the News with President Barack Obama

The news has never been cooler than when President Barack Obama appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to jam us all to sleep. In 2012, when Fallon called him “the Barackness Monster”, a recently deceased person came back to life. This is our fireside chat, and we may all look back at this fondly and remember where we were. Late night talk shows can still surprise everyone, and who didn’t smile at “Yeah, you know me” when President Obama returned in 2016? It’s an OPP reference if I’ve lost you. Sigh, good times. Okay this one wasn’t that awkward, but I love it.

4. Conan’s Final Tonight Show Monologue

It may seem like ancient history now (2010), but a lot of people who’d been watching Conan O’Brien since his Late Night run began in 1993 were pretty upset with his short Tonight Show tenure. Conan paid his dues and we waited patiently for him to grab the reigns. Well, he steered the ship for seven months. Even with some of the jabs hurled in this monologue, Conan kept it pretty classy. It would have been great to see him destroy the set à la The Eric Andre Show. And even if you were one of the three people anxiously awaiting Jay Leno’s return to The Tonight Show, the final shows were highly entertaining.

5. Bob Barker Destroys Craig Ferguson’s Desk

Bob Barker begins by insulting the quality of Ferguson’s desk, which normally leads to a duel. Barker throws out quips, and even though he was stepping down from The Price Is Right, he’s as sharp as ever in this segment. Like a gentleman, Barker asks Ferguson to take a step back before he Hulk-smashs the desk into pieces with his left fist. Somewhere in the frozen tundra, Bob Barker is hitchhiking and learning to control the rage inside him.
