Who is Hosting Saturday Night Live Tonight: October 28, 2017

Tonight, in time for Halloween weekend, Saturday Night Live is being commandeered by David S. Pumpkins. Because Un-Dead from New York, it’s The David S. Pumpkins Animated Halloween Special. Any questions??

Tonight’s cartoon special is making its television debut tonight in SNL‘s 11:30pm time slot on NBC. Considering the popularity of the David Pumpkins character, first brought to life and now also voiced by Tom Hanks, this special could easily become an All Hallows’ Eve tradition. The animated event is a spin-off of a sketch from Saturday Night Live‘s 2016 Halloween episode. David S. Pumpkins first appeared in SNL’s “Haunted Elevator” sketch in 2016. Kate McKinnon and Beck Bennett played a couple visiting a spooky attraction known as “100 Floors of Frights”. However, they soon realized that not every floor on the elevator ride was quite as scary as the others. That’s when the elevator stopped and David Pumpkins popped out in a black suit covered in orange jack-o-lanterns with two dancing skeletons with him played by Mikey Day and Bobby Moynihan who also lend their voices to tonight’s special. The character was silly, made no sense and was more confusing than frightening for the haunted elevator visitors. From there, the character became an overnight success for Tom Hanks and Saturday Night Live. David S. Pumpkins has become a popular Halloween costume idea with party stores across the country trying to stock their shelves with DSP jack-o-lantern suits to sell. Plus, the sketch was an instant social media sensation for its overall silliness and ironic comedy with people trying to figure out if they should laugh out loud at the sketch or hate it.

In the new special from Saturday Night Live writer Streeter Seidell. David S. Pumpkins, “the Ghoul of Cool”, and his friends show a young pair of siblings from a suburban town the true meaning of Halloween while confusing them in the process. Hanks appears in human form and in-character to introduce the cartoon. NBC’s President of Business Operations and Late Night Programming George Cheeks said, “It’s scary how quickly the original ‘SNL’ sketch caught on, and we’re thrilled that Tom Hanks is back to keep the fun going.”

The David S. Pumpkins Animated Halloween Special begins at 11:30pm and then will be followed at midnight on NBC by an hour of Saturday Night Live‘s best Halloween sketches from over the years with SNL Presents Halloween. The 60 minute Saturday Night Live collection of sketches will feature some of SNL fans’ Halloween favorites including Dan Aykroyd as sleazy toy manufacturer Irwin Mainway being grilled about his dangerous kids costumes by Jane Curtin, Bill Hader starring in “Vincent Price’s Halloween Special“, Stuart Smalley’s Halloween Daily Affirmations and last year’s digital short hit, “A Girl’s Halloween” featuring Aidy Bryant.

In the promos for tonight’s special, we enter David S. Pumpkins haunted house where skeletons Mikey Day and Bobby Moynihan earned a spanking that may be a trick or a treat and in the next promo we get a taste of some of the special’s animation where Pumpkins arrives in his haunted elevator after the kids choose the “magic pumpkin”.

“The David S. Pumpkins Halloween Special” starring the voices of Tom Hanks, Bobby Moynihan, Mikey Day and Emmy Award winner Peter Dinklage airs tonight at 11:30pm following at 12am by SNL Presents Halloween on NBC.
