No, sorry, Saturday Night Live is not live tonight. The show is on a brief hiatus before the final four episodes of Season 42. But you can catch up on an episode from earlier this year, hosted by Casey Affleck. Casey hosted the Christmas episode, the last one of 2016 which originally aired on December 17. Even though Casey isn’t known for his comedy skills, it was a really strong episode, with plenty of highlights and great guests including John Goodman and Fred Armisen. Alec Baldwin helmed a Donald Trump themed Christmas cold open with Goodman, one of the stronger Trump cold opens with Kate McKinnon joining in as Kellyanne Conway helping Trump go over his cabinet picks.
Other highlights of the night include Hillary Actually, a parody of a well-known scene from Love Actually that has Hillary Clinton showing up at the front door of a member of the Electoral College with a special message; New York Now, a silly, but funny bit with Casey Affleck, Kate McKinnon and Cecily Strong, and a fantastic digital short that sends a donut-loving, chain smoking Boston-accented Casey Affleck to Dunkin’ Donuts.
This was Casey’s first time hosting the show after seeing his big brother Ben host many times. Affleck has had a tremendous year, starring in one of the most critically beloved films of 2016- Manchester by the Sea. Before that he gave an Oscar nominated performances in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, and Gone Baby Gone and directed Joaquin Phoenix in the mockumentary, I’m Still Here, and appeared in all the Oceans reboot movies as Virgil Malloy.
Chance the Rapper appears as musical guest.
SNL will return live on April 15, with host Jimmy Fallon.
