Who is Hosting Saturday Night Live Tonight: July 8, 2017

The calendar still says summer, so there won’t be a brand new episode of Saturday Night Live to watch tonight. The cast and crew are enjoying their summer break and working on other projects. But you can still tune into NBC tonight at 11:30pm for laughs because NBC is re-airing an episode from earlier this season with John Cena hosting. This was the mega celebrity WWE wrestler and actor’s first time hosting Saturday Night Live- and only the third time a celebrity wrestler hosted (the first was Hulk Hogan, and the Rock was the second. Cena was promoting his movie The Wall which came out in December.

The episode, which initially ran on December 10th, was not a season favorite. A lifeless Trump-themed cold open (without Baldwin as Trump) was lifeless, and even a surprise cameo from Breaking Bad‘s Bryan Cranston couldn’t save it. The sketches were unremarkable, so if you have plans tonight, that’s okay. You aren’t missing much.

But if you’re staying home and want to laugh, you can look forward to a strong monologue involving plenty of cast members, and a solid weekend update with a great character appearance from Kate McKinnon as German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

It’s too bad SNL didn’t use their promos as sketches for this episode. Cena was the center of two great promos for December’s episode so we’re including both here. In the first, Cena cuts in on some classic SNL moments, and in the second Cena cuts a promo vowing to destroy the cast of SNL..except for one person.
