The Trailer for ‘The Comedian’ is Out and It Looks Pretty Great

Earlier this month, the folks at the Hollywood Film Awards announced that Robert DeNiro was set to receive their Hollywood Comedy Award for his role in the upcoming film The Comedian. It was (and still is) hard to say whether that was well deserved seeing as how, at the time, there wasn’t even a trailer out for the film, and early reviews have ranged from suggesting DeNiro could win an Oscar to outright predictions of failure. Well, us common folk can now finally get a look at what to expect from the movie, as that trailer has just been released.

The Comedian follows the story of aging comic Jackie Burke (Robert DeNiro), a respected but often maligned veteran comic who is trying to revive his career one gig at a time. During one of those shows, he assaults an audience member and is sentenced to 100 hours of community service, during which he meets the aptly named Harmony (Leslie Mann). The two strike up a friendship (and possibly more), teaching each other lessons about life and yada yada yada.

While the movie’s plot so far doesn’t seem to take any particularly inspired turns, it certainly has a chance to nail it on authenticity; Roastmaster General Jeff Ross wrote much of DeNiro’s stand-up material, Jessica Kirson worked with DeNiro on his performance, and comics like Jim Norton, Gilbert Gottfried and Hannibal Buress all make appearances in the film, which takes place at real comedy venues like New York’s Comedy Cellar. Add on top of that a cast a characters that includes Danny DeVito, Patti Lupone, Harvey Keitel, Billy Crystal and Edie Falco, and you’ve got a movie with a lot of potential.

Despite some mixed early reviews, the trailer looks like the film has promise so who knows.  You’ll also enjoy seeing scenes from the night DeNiro taped at New York’s Comedy Cellar.

The film will see a limited released on December 2nd, to be followed by a wide release on January 13th, 2017.
