The Next Great Sandwich

If you thought that we had every sandwich that could possibly exist, think again.  It wasn’t t that long ago, after all, that the ‘thanksgiving gobbler’ sandwich with a whole Thanksgiving dinner on a roll went mainstream.  So we decided to come up with our own list of meals that should be the next huge sandwich.  I’m sure someone somewhere has put some of these on bread, but we’ve never seen any of them.

1.  The Surf And Turf Sub.

Who the hell wouldn’t want a steak and lobster sandwich? Fuck the lobster roll, it’s over exposed and not that good. Let’s rock the surf and turf roll with some delicious steak and lobster covered in warm garlicky butter, it’ll blow everything else away.

2. Chicken Tikka Masala Bagette.

Indian food can really break through if they had a solid sandwich. Chicken Tikka Masala is already awesome roast chicken slathered in a creamy spicy sauce. The problem is Indian food is usually only accompanied by some naan bread, while tasty, doesn’t make a good sandwich base. Throw that chicken and that sauce onto a baguette and now we’re talking, everyone will be eating one.

3. Meat Lasagna To Go.

The elusive pasta sandwich. Nobody’s been able to pull it off yet. You can’t put ravioli on a roll. You wouldn’t want stuffed shells on white bread. But we’re talking toasted garlic bread…loaded up with a meat filled lasagna, dusted with parmesan cheese. We can’t believe portable lasagna isn’t already a mainstream lunch idea. Somebody call up Mario Batali.

4. East Meets West:  General Tso’s Hoagie.

Not only is it a perfect solution for your leftovers, but we think this is good enough to mainstream at lunch counters everywhere. A big chunky bread, filled with fried chinese chicken, and smothered in spicy Tsao sauce. If it’s not fatty enough, you can always dunk and deep fry the whole thing, but you don’t need to.

5. Grilled Fruit and Melted Brie Pocket.

Not everything has to be bad for you to be delicious. There are no fruit sandwiches. Okay I’m sure you can find a small cafe serving one, but we’re talking, across America. Even McDonalds could hit a home run with this. Apple slices, grapes, and of course berries too. You can stuff it in a pita pocket, or just bake it into a croissant pastry shell, like those hand held pies. Melty, sweet, and good for you too.

6. Pan Seared Foie Gras on Tiny Toasts.

No you’re not going to bag this to take to the construction site for lunch, but not all sandwiches have to go in you rlunch box.  Finger sandwiches are all you need set off the richness of pan seared Foie Gras. Two small thin slices of toast, with a perfect fatty slice in the center.  Great pass around snack for an small dinner party.

7. Tuna Tartare on Tiny Toasts.

While we’re in the tiny toasts aisle, this would be the perfect place to introduce are Tuna Tartare Sandwich. Layer it with diced apples and diced avocado, then drizzle it all with a sweet wasabi soy.  Sprinkled with tempura flakes optional. Perfection.

8. Bulgogi Hoagie.

Korean food lovers will enjoy the spicy sweet Korean BBQ meats piled on a sesame seed roll with a variety of pickles & kimchi…Sure, after we invented it we googled it and found out that it exists here and there, but we’re ready to go all the way– coast to coast– with the Bulgogi Hoagi.

9. A Knish Sandwish.

Hows abouts a knish sandwich? No silly, we’re not telling you to put a bread coated potato treat ON a sandwich. We’re saying, take this potato filled pastry and cut it in half the OTHER way, and there’s your bread. Now do it up  reuben style. Throw some corned beef or pastrami in the middle; maybe some sauerkraut on top, and and toss it all with some russian dressing or mustard, and BOOM! Knish Sandwish. Don’t limit yourself to just deli meats either. I’m thinking lamb next?

10. The Shepherd’s Sammy

Sheperd’s Pie is always enjoyed with a piece of bread to sop everything up off the plate at the end of the meal. A Sheperd’s Pie Sandwich speeds up the process. A fantastic onion roll now becomes the first layer of a Sheperd’s Pie meal. Then comes a layer of mashed potatoes, baked on top to give the sandwich some crunch and firmness. Then of course, the beef filled with gravy and diced vegetables comes next.

11.  The French Toast on Toast

French toast in french toast?  Not as stupid as it sounds.  Here’s why.  For the filling, you’re going to take a few slices of french toast, cube it, and toss it in a combination of sour cream and sugar.  layer some thinly sliced sugar coated bananas across the top.  The result?  Heavenly!  Uou could eat with a fork if you wanted by why bother when you can roll it up inside the remaining slices of french toast.  And there’s nothing wrong with throwing a little more syrup on the top, just for good measure.

12.  Soul Food Special

Start with an oversized biscuit, and put a thin layer of macaroni and cheese on the bottom.  Sprinkle some fried chicken crumbs over the top of the pasta, then carefully slice  fried chicken off the bone, and layer it on top.  Finish it off with a lot of honey dripped over the top of the chicken, and put a thin layer of greens on the top.  You probably want to butter that biscuit top before you close it all up.

13.  Chicken Pot Pie Croissantwich

I know you think the pot pie is already portable, but if you’re using a fork, it’s not a sandwich.  We’re thinking croissant sandwich, put it in a nice wrapper to catch the drippings, and obviously, make sure its warm.  This one won’t fly cold.

14.  Breakfast Greens to Go

Trust me on this.  Mixed bitter greens salad, sliced grape tomatos, sliced grapes, and warm scrambled eggs, drizzled with a honey red wine vinegarette and a splash of fresh squeezed orange.  It may sound odd, but it’s the best thing you’ve ever tasted.  Salads always do better in some kind of pocket, but you can wrap this, roll this, or even layer it on slices of warmed honey whole wheat.

15.  Pocket Full of Paella.

Not pita this time, it’s not strong enough.  Here you need a big half wheel of that round Italian bread– the one they put Italian hot dogs in.  I think it’ s like a pizza bread.  Anyway, cut that in half, open it up and stuff it full of the best paella you can find (which is really any paella), minus the muscles.  Some baby shrimps, baby scallops, small pieces of chicken and the main ingredient, saffrony delicious rice all topped with roasted pepper strips.  Then take some of that delicious green sauce they use on lobster in Spanish restaurants (what do they call that?), and you’ve got yourself the best lunch for a cold winter’s day that you could imagine.
