This Week on The 5:  Our Favorite Internet Superstars Who Were Discovered on The News

Now that we have the internet, local news goes world wide. And with that, everyday normal people are becoming overnight stars. In the past they would of faded into obscurity, now they can generate millions of hits for a local affiliate news station. Who knows if it’s good for the station itself, but the locals are blowing up. Most them get auto-tuned and songified, extending their stardom even further. Below are five of the most loved.

1.  Antoine Dodson “He’s Snatching Your People Up”

Antoine was just a dude living in an Alabama project. Someone tried to rape his sister and he got interviewed by a news crew. The rest is history. The Gregory Brothers made a song out of his news report which charted on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold thousands of copies on iTunes. He got interviewed by The Today Show, and ended up performing the song on the BET Hip Hop Awards.

2.  Jimmy McMillan “The Rent is Too Damn High”

In the 2010 New York governor debates, Andrew Cuomo was expected to dominate, but no one saw Brooklynite Jimmy McMillan coming. With his wacked out facial hair, cool looking gloves and his representation of the Rent Is Too Damn High Party, he was the only candidate anyone was talking about the next day. He made the debate memorable. Turns out he used to be a male stripper, likes smoking weed, and actually doesn’t pay rent on his Brooklyn apartment. But never mind all that, he made the one statement every single person living in New York City can agree on, the rent is just too damn high.

 3.  Carter Johnson “He Came in Dukes of Hazard”

Carter Johnson, or probably better known as the guy from Florida in the coon skin hat, broke in 2011 when he was interviewed as a witness to a getaway from a bank robbery. No song was created using Johnson’s report, but no one can forget him. He’s the best thing to happen to Dale, Jr since Dale Senior.

 4.  Sweet Brown “Ain’t Nobody Got Time for That”

The lovely Sweet Brown stumbled into internet stardom after her apartment complex caught on fire and she was interviewed for her account of the situation. This woman could be the greatest character interview ever, and her Youtube hits reflect that. The Parody Factory put together a remix which got more hits than the original news story did. Grab a cold pop and enjoy the song.

5. Kai the Homeless Hitchhiker  “Smash”

Now we come to the newest member of this exclusive club, Kai the Homeless Hitchhiker from Dog Town. Kai was just an innocent bystander, trying to get a ride to his next location when destiny intervened to make him an internet celebrity. The weirdo he was getting a lift from lost his shit and ended up running someone over and attacking a woman near the car crash. Kai grabbed a hatchet and beat the guy into submission, and he’d do it all over again if he had the chance. It took less than 24 hours for his story to get remixed, and the skies the limit for the guy who no one can even find right now.
