The 5: Internet Photo Fads

This Week on the 5: Trendy Excuses To Post Pictures of Yourself

Who knows why people follow Internet trends, but they love to do it, and they love to take pictures of it.  Of course the ultimate goal is to have it go viral, even though viral trends don’t last long.   Here are four of those trends that at one time, everyone was talking about, and one that may be getting memed up as you read this.

Planking

What it is:  According to the wiki page for Planking, Tom Green invented this in 1994. Well, he may of created it, but no one jumped on it until recent years when it blew up on the intarwebs. Some call it the “Lying Down Game”, all you have to do is lay down straight as a board in odd places. Yes, it’s meaningless, but most photo trends are.

Tebowing

What it is:  Tebowing took the ‘net by storm.  It got huge, fast.  Plus it was much easier to do than planking and owling, letting everyone get in on it. The Tebowing fad got huge while he was playing for Denver and somehow winning game after game, he’d drop to one knee on the ground and bring his fist to his head to give props to the G-O-D. What he didn’t realize was that everyone would bust his balls and mock it out on the internets. Thus a meme was born.

The Sleeveface (aka LP Portraits)

Originated by a UK DJ while screwing around with his friends in 2007, Sleevefacing has stuck around to an extent, the idea is you attempt to recreate an album cover in real life, using the album cover and your face. It actually inspired  a book collecting some of the best ones, so kudos to Sleevefacing for hitting the main stream! Obviously, this works best when you got a face on the actual album cover.

The Duckface

The most unattractive face a woman, or man can make is the duck face. Yet for some reason, for years, people have been posing using this odd lip pose- and not to create a meme– they were just doing it– especially on MySpace.  Finally the duckface phenomenon became so widespread, that people couldn’t help but notice, and the intentional and ironic duckface was born.  Not sure if girls have been shamed into finally giving up the duck, but thankfully, this trend is finally declining.

Sexdolling

And here is the new fad that’s coming up in the ranks. Hey ladies! You know what’s sexier than pushing your lips together and out in an oh so sexy duck face? Keeping that mouth open! Sure, you may look like a sex doll, surprised to see some weirdo about copulate with you, but everyone’s gonna think you’re hella sexy. Thanks to Reddit for putting us all on to this new fad.
