The 5: Halloween Edition

It’s that time of year again where we watch horror film  marathons, put on zombie makeup, watch out for scary ghost monsters……and eat a few butterfingers forthe hell of it.  Here are our five scariest moments in horror movie history:

  • From 1973 and Director William Friedkin: The Exorcist:  The scary crab walk down the stairs, added in the re-release was paralyzingly scary.  If you haven’t seen it, check it out this year.
  • From 2007 and Director OrenPeli:  Paranormal Activity:  The sheer terror of the moment when the sheets get blown off Katie and she gets dragged off the bed and into the hall, on a single camera shot.  Blair Witch type terror at its best.
  • From 1999 and Director M. Night Shyamalan:  The Sixth Sense:  This film is is best known for its smaller moments:  the quick, jerky momentary scares. Best moment?  When we first see the poisoned dead girl under the bed.
  • From 2001 and Director Alejandro Amenabar:   The Others:  Every halloween film list should have at least one great ghost story, and thats what The Others brings:  amazing ghost stories.  Best moments here actually happen in the background.
  • From 2002 and Director Gore Verbinski:  The Ring:  Most memorable moment?  When a ghoulish  and dripping wet Samara comes crawling out of the tv– literally bonechilling.

I know you only get 5, but there are so many others that could be included:
    – The closed circuit cam footage scene in the Grudge, a scary as hell movie, that scene really gets you
    – Poltergeist clown scene
    – Baby zombie birth scene in the new Dawn of the Dead
    – Dr. Satan in the House of 1000 Corpses
    – most of 1408 once the room starts fucking with John Cusac

Those are just off the top off my head, and while I enjoyed PA and the Others, any of these could have replaced those.

    * The Ring – I agree with this pick above. After the first time I saw it, I went home to a dark house knowing that if the tv came on to static for no reason I would have died from a heart attack or similar.
    * Jacob’s Ladder – so many choices here, but I’ll pick the scene where his wife is dancing at the party.
*John Carpenter’s The Thing – when they are testing everyones blood one by one.
*Evil Dead – Queen of spades, four of hearts, eight of spades….
*House of 1,000 Corpes – when Rainn Wilson is being chopped up while Sherri Moon Zombie laughs and dances. So disturbing.

Newlyweds witness a roadside cop killing in Brainerd and are subsequently chased by the killer. They crash on the icy road and are killed. Put yourself in that situation. One of the most chilling scenes ever shot. Bravo Cohen Brothers.

    Exorcist 3

The scene with the nurse coming out of the patients room. Beats any scene on this list.

I really feel that Exorcist III should also be doubled in with Exorcist I (The only two based on William Peter Blatty’s novels) The sheer terror and awesomeness of George C Scott denouncing his atheism while pinned to the wall by the devil who was played by the great Brad Dourif is a cringe worthy sequence if I ever saw one.

There’s also the scene in IT when Pennywise the clown pokes his head out of the shower drain…the only movie that has ever genuinely terrified me. I still sometimes get chills when I’m in the shower and think of that scene.
