The 5: Great Moments in World Series History
The World Series, like life, comes down to moments. Since the first Series in 1903, we’ve had over 100 championships, each with at least four games. This leaves an awful lot of big moments– some exciting, some devastating– most of them unforgettable. We’ve picked out five of our favorites.
- 1977: Reggie Jackson hits 3rd homer against the Dodgers: This was when Reggie Jackson cemented his legendary title: Mr. October.
- 1975: Carlton Fisk hits a homer in game 6 against the Reds: The greatest moment in Red Sox history until they won the World Series was this game 6 walk off home run, by the legendary Carlton Fisk.
- 1988: Kirk Gibson’s game winning homer against Oakland in game 1: A limping Kirk Gibson hits a game winning shot that made viewers believe they were watching The Natural.
- 1986: Bill Buckner’s error, game 6 against the Mets: One of the saddest plays to ever happen to a great ballplayer. It took many years and catching a baby on Curb Your Enthusiasm to erase the Red Sox Curse.
- 1956: Don Larsen records the final out pitching a perfect game vs Brooklyn: The single greatest feat in baseball is a perfect game. Larsen became the first and only pitcher in World Series history to do it. It may never happen again.
