Summer Comedy Movies 2016
Summer 2016 has some fantastic comedies coming out all through the season. The Lonely Island have created a hilarious looking mockumentary. Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key are debuting their first big feature together. And the most intriguing on the list, Kevin Spacey is playing a cat. This year also has sequels from much loved originals like Project X, Bridget Jones’s Diary, and Neighbors. From blockbusters to indie films, this year has some great choices! April 29th: Keanu
Starring Jordan Peele, Keegan-Michael Key, Method Man, Will Forte, Nia Long
When Rell gets dumped by his girlfriend, he befriends a kitten he names Keanu who makes his life sweeter. However, when Keanu goes missing, Rell and his best friend Clarence go on a hunt to track down his beloved pet. Watch the trailer.
May 2016
May 13th: Sundown
Starring Devon Werkheiser, Sean Marquette, Teri Hatcher, Camilla Belle, Sara Paxton
Also known as “I Brake for Gringos,” “Sundown” is a coming of age film about a vacation gone wild. Logan and Blake are best friends who decide to travel to Puerto Vallarta in hopes to meet up with their crushes. When Logan meets who he thinks is the girl of his dreams, their lives are turned upside down. Watch the trailer.
May 20th: The Angry Birds Movie
Starring Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Kate McKinnon, Sean Penn, Tony Hale, Keegan-Michael Key, Bill Hader, Peter Dinklage
They took over your cell phone and now they’ll be taking over the big screen. “The Angry Birds Movie” stars three birds who come face to face with a common enemy – pigs. Watch the trailer.
May 20th: Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising
Starring Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne, Zac Efron, Chloe Grace Moretz
Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne are back to star in the sequel to the box office hit “Neighbors.” This time, it won’t be fraternity boys causing suburban disorder. Sorority girls will take their turn in making the married couple’s life miserable. Watch the trailer now.
May 20th: Hard Sell
Starring Skyler Gisondo, Katrina Bowden, Kristin Chenoweth
Skyler Gisondo and Katrina Bowden star in this highschool age comedy and play a duo that teams up for a controversial plan. Gisondo plays a highschool boy who hires Bowden’s character to help him make money for his emotionally unstable mother at home. Watch the trailer.
May 20th: The Nice Guys
Starring Ryan Gosling, Russell Crowe, Matt Bomer, Kim Basinger, Margaret Qualley
In 1977 Los Angeles, a private eye and a hired enforcer pair up to find a missing young girl. The duo also investigates the death of a porn star along the way through an action packed journey. Watch the trailer here.
JUNE 2016
June 3th: Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping
Starring Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, Akiva Schaffer, Sarah Silverman
The Lonely Island have teamed up once again to create a mockumentary about a worshipped popstar who is trying to bounce back after a failed record. Desperate to fix his reputation, conner4real will do anything to be back on top. Watch the trailer here.
June 17th: Central Intelligence
Starring Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Amy Ryan, Aaron Paul
Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson play two characters that were friends as kids and reunite for their high school reunion. They get caught up in a dangerous adventure and must work together to get through it. Watch the trailer here.
June 24th: Weiner Dog
Starring Greta Gerwig, Danny DeVito, Julie Delpy, Zosia Mamet, Ellen Burstyn, Kieran Culkin
A loose sequel to “Welcome to the Dollhouse,” this film has been described as “weird” and “angry.” The plot involves a weiner dog who travels from place to place comforting different individuals throughout the film. Edward Lachman (who previously shot Carol) was the film’s cinematographer. Watch the trailer here.
June 24th: Swiss Army Man
Starring Daniel Radcliffe, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Paul Dano.
A man marooned on an island and at the verge of hanging himself, sees a farting corpse wash up on the beach and the two begin a bizarre friendship. Is he hallucinating or does the corpse have powers including the ability to converse? The film debuted at Sundance to extreme and mixed reactions. Watch the trailer here.
JULY 2016
July 8th: Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates
Starring Zac Efron, Anna Kendrick, Adam DeVine, Aubrey Plaza
Sure to be raunchy, Zac Efron and Adam DeVine star as two brothers who know how to party. They need dates for their sister’s wedding, so they place an ad online looking for ladies to attend the event with. The girls they get end up being more than what they bargained for. Watch the trailer here.
July 8th: The Secret Life of Pets
Starring Louis C.K., Eric Stonestreet, Kevin Hart, Ellie Kemper, Lake Bell, Jenny Slate, Bobby Moynihan, Hannibal Buress, Albert Brooks
It’s the war of the pets in this new animated comedy. This film features an all star cast of adorable characters that get into trouble when their owners aren’t home. Watch the trailer here.
July 18th: Ghostbusters
Starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones
It’s been 30 years, but the classic fan favorite is finally back. Dive into the supernatural world of ghosts and ghouls with a new team of Ghostbusters. Watch the trailer here.
July 22st: Absolutely Fabulous
Starring Jennifer Saunders, Joanna Lumley, Julia Sawalha, Jane Horrocks, June Whitfield
The much anticipated “Absolutely Fabulous” movie is finally arriving for fans of the original BBC television sitcom. Watch the hilarity of Edina and Patsy on the big screen when this cameo-packed film hits US theaters on July 22st. Watch the trailer here.
July 29th: Bad Moms
Starring Mila Kunis, Christina Applegate, Kristen Bell, Jada Pinkett Smith, Kathryn Hahn
Bad Moms is a new summer comedy that pokes fun at the pressure of being a good mother. As the main character struggles under the weight of being the perfect mom, she decides to go on an adventure with her other mom friends to have fun and finally let loose. Watch the trailer here.
AUGUST 2016
August 5th: Suicide Squad
Starring Will Smith, Jared Leto, Josh Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Margot Robbie, Cara Delevigne
Watch the worst supervillains in the world embark on an operation orchestrated by a secret government agency. This malicious team will work together to execute the mission, but not without some expected antics along the way. Watch the trailer here.
August 5th: Nine Lives
Starring Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Garner, Christopher Walken, Malina Weissman, Cheryl Hines, Robbie Amell
Kevin Spacey plays a successful billionaire that gets trapped in the body of a cat. Now, he’ll have to somehow figure out how to get back to his human form. Watch the trailer here.
August 12th: Florence Foster Jenkins
Starring Meryl Streep, Hugh Grant, Simon Helberg, Rebecca Ferguson, Nina Arianda
Multiple oscar winner Meryl Streep stars in “Florence Foster Jenkins,” an inspiring new film that tells the true story of a woman with the larger than life dream of becoming a singer. The only issue is, she can’t sing! Watch the trailer here.
August 12th: Cafe Society
Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Steve Carell, Blake Lively, Parker Posey, Jeannie Berlin, Corey Stoll, Ken Stott.
Woody Allen debuts his new film this summer starring Jesse Eisenberg as a man who ventures to Hollywood to start his film career. This romantic comedy set in the 1930’s tells a tale of love, excitement, and challenges in a crazy industry. Watch the trailer here.
August 12th: Sausage Party
Starring Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Jonah HIll, Bill Hader, Michael Cera, James Franco, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Paul Rudd
This is an animated movie but it’s not made for kids. With an R rating, Sausage Party is about a bunch of characters made of food trying to escape from being eaten. Watch the trailer here.
August 12: The Hollars
Starring John Krasinski, Anna Kendrick, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Margo Martindale, Charlie Day
This comedy/drama stars John Krasinski who plays a man who must spend time with his dysfunctional family when his mother is diagnosed with a brain tumor. Watch the trailer here.
August 19th: David Brent: Life on the Road
Starring Ricky Gervais, Doc Brown, Jo Hartley, Mandeep Dhillon, Tom Bennett, Oliver Maltman, Rebecca Gethings
Ricky Gervais plays David Brent, the lead star on the UK’s office who is now a traveling salesman. With dreams of becoming a rockstar, David hopes to earn enough money for a UK tour. The film is debuting in the UK August 19th and is planned to be shown elsewhere soon after. Watch the trailer here.
August 19th: War Dogs
Starring Jonah Hill, Miles Teller
Based on a true story, two twenty somethings become unlikely arms dealers. These unqualified buddies go on an adventure of drugs, partying, and crime. Watch the trailer here.
August 19th: Project XX
Starring: Unknown
Not much is known yet about the sequel to “Project X,” but the release date is official. Michael Bacall will be reportedly writing the feature on his own.
SEPTEMBER 2016
September 16th: Bridget Jones’s Baby
Starring Renee Zellweger, Colin Firth, Patrick Dempsey
Bridget Jones’s Diary finally has a sequel and this time, it involves a baby. In this new rom com, Bridget will not only have to deal with a surprised pregnancy, but also with figuring out who the father is. Watch the trailer here.
September 30th: Masterminds
Starring Kristen Wiig, Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson, Jason Sudeikis
Originally planned to be released in 2015, Masterminds will finally be shown in theaters this summer. Galifianakis plays David, a man who’s bored with his life and craving adventure. He meets Kelly, played by Kristen Wiig, who talks him into going on a dangerous heist. Watch the trailer here.
