Steve Harvey in Legal Battle Over 23 Year Old Footage
Comedian and TV show host Steve Harvey knows better than most that the past can come back to haunt you. The radio and television personality is set to head to trial in the coming months with videographer Joseph Cooper over some 23 year old video footage. It’s a long and contentious story, but the gist is this: Cooper was hired to film some material at Harvey’s Steve Harvey Comedy Club in Dallas, Texas, roughly 120 hours worth. Cooper is claiming ownership of that footage, asserting that he and Harvey had a contract saying as much. Harvey disputes signing any contract, and says that even if he did sign something, he certainly wouldn’t have granted ownership rights of his material to Cooper.
The two have been embroiled in a battle over who owns the rights to the footage — and who may have missed out on profits from its use as a result — for years now, and now U.S. District Judge Jane Boyle is ordering both sides to set a trial date before January 30th, 2017. It is likely that during a trial, Harvey’s net worth would be made available in order to suss out potential damages for either side. As the host of a morning radio show, a daytime talk show and two game shows (as well as the author of multiple books), it is possible that that number could be rather large.
If there’s anything Steve Harvey’s good at, it’s not sweating the small stuff, so we think he’ll be just fine.
