SNL Leads Emmy Nominations for 2017 With 22

Not only did SNL have the biggest rated season in years, they’ve also led the pack tie-ing for the most Emmy nominations overall for Season 42 which featured Alec Baldwin as a sort of adjunct cast member in his role as Donald Trump. Among the 22 nominations, Saturday Night Live grabbed (tieing with Westworld) were a nomination for Best Variety Sketch Series, Outstanding Writing For A Variety Series, Baldwin grabbed a nom for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Variety Series, and SNL dominated the Supporting Actress in a Comedy Variety Series category with Vanessa Bayer, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon getting nominations. Three SNL hosts were nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor In A Comedy Series: Tom Hanks, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Dave Chappelle, and another two SNL hosts were nominated for Oustanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series: Kristin Wiig and Melissa McCarthy.

A few other SNL noms include one for Costume Design on the Emily Blunt hosted episode, Outstanding Directing for a Variety Series, Outstanding Picture Editing for a Variety Series, Outstanding Hairstyling, Outstanding Interactive Program, Lighting Design, Non-Prosthetic Makeup, Prosthetic Makeup, Outstanding Stunt Coordination, Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video Control and even for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics, for the song Last Christmas in the Casey Affleck episode with lyrics written by Chancelor Johnathan Bennett, Kenan Thompson, and Will Stephen, music by Eli Brueggemann.  And related to SNL, Creating Saturday Night Live was nominated for Outstanding Short Form Nonfiction Or Reality Series.

Beyond SNL- the shows leading the way for comedy series are Silicon Valley (10), Last Week Tonight (9), Transparent (7) and Atlanta (6).  Both Louis C.K. and Sarah Silverman were nominated for writing for their 2017 specials, Louis C.K. 2017 and Sarah Silverman: A Speck of Dust.

Some of our favorite smaller shows got some love- thank goodness Pamela Adlon got a nomination for Better Things, and Louie Anderson and Zach Galifianakis both got nominations for their roles in Baskets, and its great to see IFC pick up a nomination for Documentary Now. Newcomer Superior Donuts picked up a nomination in the Outstanding Cinematography For A Multi-Camera Series category.

Two perennial nominees, Modern Family and Veep continued their impressive streaks of being nominated for Best Comedy Series each year that they have been on television. For Modern Family, that’s a streak of 8 straight nominations and Veep picked up its 5th straight. This year these two comedies will face competition from Black-ish, Atlanta, Master of None, Silicon Valley and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, to see which show takes home the Primetime Emmy.

Comedy Central secured seven nominations with four individual series receiving nominations: Broad City, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, Drunk History and South Park.

Alec Baldwin also got nominated for Match Game, and W. Kamau Bell’s United Shades Of America With W. Kamau
Bell got nominations in the Best Host of a Reality Show or Reality Competition category. Kudos to RuPaul and company who not only secured seven Emmy noms, but also chalked up a nomination for RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked— the only YouTube series competing against cable TV programming in the category of Unstructured Reality Series.
