SiriusXM’s ‘Top Comic’ Contest Announces its Eight Finalists

We’ve been following SiriusXM’s 8th annual Top Comic competition since it started. It’s been a long road for the competitors, who have seen their numbers dwindle from hundreds to only a select few, but now the end is in sight. Today, SiriusXM announced the eight finalists who will head to Toronto next month to battle it out for the competition’s top honors.

After weeks of voting from the public and deliberation among the contest’s judges, the chosen few who will advance to the finals are:

Kyle Bottom (Hometown: Vancouver)

Graham Chittenden (Hometown: Brantford)

Gavin Matts (Hometown: New Westminster)

Kathleen McGee (Hometown: Edmonton)

Sterling Scott (Hometown: Edmonton)

Michelle Shaughnessy (Hometown: Toronto)

Ana-Marija Stojic (Hometown: Toronto)

Kelly Taylor (Hometown: Prince Albert)

The Top Comic Finale will take place at Toronto’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre on September 28th, during the city’s JFL42 comedy festival. Hosted by comedian Ben Miner and featuring a headlining set by tenured comedian Todd Barry, the event will see all eight finalists leaving it all on stage, with the hopes that the panel of judges will choose them as SiriusXM’s Top Comic. The winner will receive $25,000 in prize money, along with guaranteed televised appearances at three huge Canadian comedy festivals in 2018: Just for Laughs in Montreal, JFL42 in Toronto and JFL NorthWest in Vancouver. The two runners up will also get televised spots, at JFL in Montreal as well as co-headlining shows at JFL42.

“I can always feel the energy and excitement at the Finale— it’s my favourite event of the year,” said Ben Miner. “The $25,000 prize and trio of festival gigs can be career-changing for these comics, and it’s absolutely exhilarating to see a live performance with so much on the line.”
