Saturday Night Live Spinoff Series Launched on Snapchat

“Saturday Night Live” is expanding its content from the titular show and even internet to Snapchat with a series called “Boycott” starring Aidy Bryant and Beck Bennett. Bennett and Bryant play a couple seeking to boycott all Donald Trump-related products discovering how hard that actually is. The series operates like a sketch exclusive to Snapchat; a rally-weary Bryant and Bennett get in an Uber satisfied with how they’ve stuck it to Trump when they learn a key executive for Uber is a Trump supporter. They eventually trade in the Uber for a pedicab driven by Bobby Moynihan, but it turns out their driver bought his pedicab off of Amazon. Which also sells Trump ties. Their day spins wildly out of control, with Bennett needing to trash his all-Gucci outfit because their flagship store is in Trump Tower and the couple tearing anything from Bed, Bath and Beyond off their apartment’s walls and throwing it off the roof.

The series had the full resources of “SNL” behind it with co-head writers Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider writing it. Besides the three “SNL” stars, the series had “Obvious Child” director Paul Briganti. It’s interesting to see what response “Boycott” earns, especially considering another Snap series/show: Disney-ABC’s “Watch Party: The Bachelor” which makes fun of the latest contestants isn’t nearly as conceptual as this, which operates like a sketch. While “Watch Party” plays out weekly, “Boycott” most likely won’t be repeated weekly or monthly unless the characters, who aren’t particularly memorable so much as topical, are recurring. Moreover, a key difference between the two is that “Boycott” is not a funny break-down of a show that already aired with hosts skipping around any way, but a linear sketch, meaning audiences can’t exactly flick through snippets like the app lends itself towards.

Besides the eternally accessible streaming past episodes of “SNL”, this also marks the show foraying into releasing content every day of the week. While plenty of channels have frequently updating channels, it’s rarer for a show to have its own channel. However, it makes sense that such a ridiculously well established show like “SNL” would be a natural choice for the medium and it remains to be seen how frequently they’ll update this channel.
