Sam Smith Now Owes Tom Petty Some Dough

Did you ever think Sam Smith’s hit “Stay With Me” sounds a lot like Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down?” Well, there’s a good reason: it does, enough that Smith has settled a copyright dispute that will add Jeff Lynne and Petty as co-writers. Now when you find yourself annoyed about how overplayed that song is, you’ll feel better knowing Tom Petty is getting some royalties off it.
