SAG Awards Tonight, Who Will Win In Comedy!?
The 21st annual Screen Actors Guild awards will presented tonight. The awards presented to actors by actors will have no best sound, cinematography, costume design categories. The SAG Awards get right to business with the year’s best in acting in film and television.
The big award of the night is Outstanding Performance By a Cast In a Motion Picture. “Birdman” and “The Grand Budapest Hotel” are the comedies nominated in this category. They go up against the casts of “Boyhood”, “The Imitation Game” and “The Theory of Everything”. “Birdman” seems to have the heat, but it was “Grand Budapest” and “Boyhood” which took home Golden Globe awards for best films. We’ll see what the union members think about their ensemble work.
Michael Keaton is a favorite for “Birdman” in the nominees for Outstanding Performance By A Male Actor In A Leading Role. His competition is coming from Steve Carell for “Foxcatcher”, Benedict Cumberbatch for “The Imitation Game”, Jake Gyllenhaal for “Nightcrawler” and Eddie Redmayne “The Theory of Everything”.
“Birdman” is representing comedy in the supporting actor and actress SAG awards as well. Edward Norton is nominated for “Birdman” for Outstanding Performance By A Male Actor In A Supporting Role against Robert Duvall “The Judge”, Ethan Hawke “Boyhood”, Mark Ruffalo “Foxcatcher” and J.K. Simmons “Whiplash”.
For Outstanding Performance By A Female Actor In A Supporting Role, Emma Stone has picked up another nomination for “Birdman” and Naomi Watts is nominated for the comedy-drama “St. Vincent”. The other nominees include Patricia Arquette “Boyhood”, Keira Knightley “The Imitation Game” and Meryl Streep “Into the Woods”.
The SAG Awards also cover acting in television. Here’s the nominees for Outstanding Performance By An Ensemble In A Comedy Series. They are “The Big Bang Theory”, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”,l “Modern Family”, “Orange Is the New Black” and “Veep”.
Outstanding Performance By A Male Actor In A Comedy Series nominees include Louis C.K. for “Louie”, Ty Burrell for “Modern Family”, William H. Macy for “Shameless”, Jim Parsons “The Big Bang Theory” and Eric Stonestreet “Modern Family”. Ty Burrell picked up the SAG Award in this category last year. His win came after a 7 year run of wins by Alec Baldwin for “30 Rock”.
The women nominated for Outstanding Performance By A Female Actor In A Comedy Series are Uzo Aduba “Orange Is the New Black”, Julie Bowen “Modern Family”, Edie Falco “Nurse Jackie”, Julia Louis-Dreyfus “Veep” and Amy Poehler “Parks and Recreation”. Julia Louis-Dreyfus won last year for “Veep”.
Billy Bob Thornton’s performance as Lorne Malvo in the dark comedy mini-series “Fargo” got him a nomination for Outstanding Performance By A Male Actor In A Television Movie Or Miniseries at the SAG Awards. He’s up against Adrien Brody for “Houdini”, Benedict Cumberbatch for “Sherlock: His Last Vow”,Richard Jenkins for “Olive Kitteridge” and Mark Ruffalo for “The Normal Heart”.
The 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards are tonight at 8pm et on TNT and TBS.
