Roseanne Cancelled: Comedians React on Twitter
There’s no bigger story today on social media (or anywhere on the internet) than ABC canceling “Roseanne” after a racist tweet by the comedian went viral this morning. The response from fellow comedians was immediate and overwhelmingly supportive of the decision to can the show. In our entire feed we only spotted one solitary tweet by a comedian that was critical of ABC’s decision to pull the show.
If you have been sleeping all day, ABC has canceled the Roseanne reboot after Roseanne posted, then deleted and apologized for a racist tweet. Her managers, ICM have dropped her as a client. Hollywood has reacted almost universally praising the decision.
In the tweet Barr had responded to someone else’s tweet that was critical of former Obama advisor Valerie Jarrett. She wrote “Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj,” with the vj referring to Jarrett. Roseanne responded to comments that her tweet was racist by simply saying “Muslims r NOT a race”.
She apologized for her tweet, saying it was just a joke in a later tweet saying, “I apologize to Valerie Jarrett and to all Americans. I am truly sorry for making a bad joke about her politics and her looks. I should have known better. Forgive me-my joke was in bad taste.” Soon after she tweeted that she was leaving the social media network, a decision that didn’t stop ABC and her managers from dumping her.
I will not be returning to @RoseanneOnABC.

What’s happened to Roseanne Barr reminds me that sometimes it’s best for our heroes to die young.

This wasn't censorship. This was business. She hasn't been prosecuted. She hasn't been silenced. She can carry on saying what she wants. It's just that her employers have decided they don't want to employ her any more. This is freedom. https://t.co/O1VIz6bzSp

I applaud ABC for doing the right thing in a timely manner. I feel bad for the crew that depended on that gig financially. Summer months are hard to get jobs especially once you have relocated with your family.

A) Not lost on me that I can't get a TV gig or special, despite selling out shows in major venues across the country, because of a pic with a mask and ketchup, and that Roseanne got a network show despite tweeting insane and racist conspiracy theories that she actually believed.
— Kathy Griffin (@kathygriffin) May 29, 2018
Roseanne’s recent comments about Valerie Jarrett, and so much more, are abhorrent and do not reflect the beliefs of our cast and crew or anyone associated with our show. I am disappointed in her actions to say the least.

ABC: Your show's a huge hit. Keep doing everything you do. But just 1 teeny tiny thing. Please stay off Twitter.
Roseanne: I will. I promise. Right after this last Valerie Jarrett tweet.
ABC: Great!… Wait. What?

Who could have possibly guessed that Roseanne would still be vile and insane after getting this new job? That would be like guessing that Donald Trump would just go on being vile and insane after becoming president!

Too soon for a reboot?

FIRST RULE OF COMEDY: Be as racist as possible.
SECOND RULE OF COMEDY: Say it was just a joke when people get mad.
THRID RULE OF COMEDY: Fuck over the writers, actors and crew that made your show great.
FOURTH RULE OF COMEDY: Go fuck yourself, Roseanne.

Someone last night complimented me on saying wild shit on Twitter, "unlike other verified people." Honestly it's only because I still got nothing to lose. The SECOND I do, I'm paying someone to tweet the most generic shit you've ever read in your life #Roseanne

I can't wait for ABC to comment on Roseanne's pervasive/overt racism as soon as her ratings dip enough that it's not profitable to ignore.

Oh, the empowered white lady with irrational views called black people apes? That’s crazy. it’s like the nazi’s are back. It’s almost like people should have expected, while feeding problematic people with television content because money runs all things, mean shit will be said.

Well I guess Roseanne will have to go back to what she does best- her groundbreaking brand of searingly funny, racially tinged, macadamia nut based stand up comedy.

IF SOMEONE AT DEADLINE REPORTED THAT THEY WERE REPLACING ROSEANNE WITH LIVING SINGLE REBOOT THEY WOULD HAAAAVE TO DO IT JUST SAYING IF ANYONE HAS AN IN I SAY GO FOR IT

Maybe Christopher Plummer can just play Roseanne?
