Robert Smigel Explains the “Asshole” Concept Behind the Night of Too Many Stars Charity Fundraiser Event

Robert Smigel has a brand new series out, The Jack and Triumph Show on Adult Swim, and this week he also produced the gigantic Night of Too Many Stars to raise money for programs for kids with Autism.  The event too place on Saturday and will air on Comedy Central on Sunday night.  Smigel sat down with Jon Stewart, who is always a gigantic part of The Night of Too Many Stars, on The Daily Show last night.

Among many other things on Robert’s resume, he of course created and voices Triumph the Insult Comic dog.  So he has experience being an asshole. And Smigel told Stewart that when he conceived of the idea behind Night of Too Many Stars, he told Stewart, he thought, “what if a benefit was run by an asshole.”  So the night is full of a bunch of “asshole ideas” with celebrities auctioning of bizarre opportunities– like John Oliver who auctioned off the chance to commit a crime with him.  And then they went out and committed the crime live, via video feed, during the show!  The night is full of crazy moments like that, as well as incredibly touching moments, like a surprising and rare tender public moment with Gilbert Gottfried.

Sunday night, the show airs on Comedy Central, and celebrities will be manning phone banks to take donations to Smigel’s amazing fund, so make sure you tune in.
