Ricky Gervais Tweet About Hacked Nudes Upsets The Twitterverse
Ricky Gervais found himself in a Twit-Storm after tweeting a comment about the hacked accounts of women celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence, who had nude photos of themselves leaked online. His tweet suggested that celebrities should all make it more difficult for hackers by not having private and intimate photos on their computers and phones in the first place.
Ricky deleted the tweet, but according to the Daily Beast, it had been retweeted over 1000 times before it was taken down. That’s when the outrage started coming in. He was bombarded with it. Then Ricky decided that he not only had to explain himself, but also jokes and free speech in general.
Here’s Ricky’s deleted joke on Twitter. One angry tweeter captured an image of it.

Ricky responded by leaking a photo of himself in a compromised and very sexy position.
Anyone who retweets this leaked erotic photo of me should be ashamed of themselves. pic.twitter.com/p2KBa6serK

After the complaints started flying in, Ricky felt the need to start tweeting an explanation of how comedy works.
Making a joke about a thing doesn't mean you condone that thing.

Of course the hackers are 100% to blame but you can still makes jokes about it. Jokes don't portray your true serious feelings on a subject

Then Ricky’s tweets turned to free speech.
It's more important to spend your energy trying to stop actual bad things than to run around trying to stop jokes about bad things.

Offence is the collateral damage of free speech.

And of course, Hitler came up.
Whenever I defend freedom of speech someone always says "so you'd let Hitler off?" Haha. It wasn't his words so much as all that genocide.

Make jokes, not war.
