The Razzies Go Political, Comedy Gets One Award

It’s easy to remember the days of Adam Sandler making a movie and then going home with an arms full of Golden Raspberry Awards for making the worst movie of the year. In 2017, those days are over and the era of comedy domination at the Razzies is a thing of the past. This year’s Razzies have been announced and on this year’s winners list, comedy was almost completely shut out. Comedy had plenty of chances to win (or is it lose?) with films including Zoolander 2 which set a Razzies record with 9 nominations. The Ben Stiller helmed sequel picked up the only award given to a comedy by the Razzies this year, which was for Worst Supporting Actress, Kristen Wiig. Other comedies nominated this year included Dirty Grandpa starring Robert De Niro and Zac Efron, also Tyler Perry’s BOO! A Medea Halloween, and Mother’s Day (Garry Marshall’s last film) featuring an all-star cast with Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston and Kate Hudson.

Picking up the big wins last night was the political documentary, Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party. It was nominated for 5 Razzies, winning 4 of the awards. The film picked up Worst Movie of the Year along with Worst Director for Dinesh D’Souza and Worst Actor also for D’Souza who appeared in the movie as himself. Hillary’s America also won Worst Actress for Becky Turner who portrayed the Democratic nominee in the doc. Hopefully, Hillary Clinton finding out that the documentary that trashed her and her party was named Worst Movie of 2016, will make up for not winning the White House.

Dominating the lesser awards at the Razzies was the film expected to win everything, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Perhaps the most panned movie of 2016, BvS, lost out on the big Golden Raspberrys, but did go back to the Bat-Cave with awards for Worst Supporting Actor for Jesse Eisenberg playing the villainous Lex Luthor. Plus, the movie won Worst On-Screen Combo for Ben Affleck & Henry Cavill as Batman and Superman respectively, Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel, and Worst Screenplay.

Each year now the Razzies also honor a past winner of the Golden Raspberry who has redeemed themselves with an excellent film or performance. This year the Razzie Redeemer Award went to Mel Gibson for his work on the critically acclaimed Hacksaw Ridge.

The Razzies made their winners announcement in a video released earlier today which you can watch below.
