Quick Question: Marriage

The word marriage never appears anywhere in the US Constitution.  If the US government chose to de-legalize marriage (ending benefits to married couples), would you still get/believe in marriage?

Fuck marriage..from a guy who has been married for 30 years. If you love someone, you don’t need a law to prove it

I love my wife and I am glad we are married. The law has nothing to do with it. A marriage certificate is just a piece of paper so the local government can charge some fees..

  9. Aazimar

    March 27, 2013 at 1:04 pm

I’d still be married, but to me its a religious bond between two people.  If your religion says two people of the same sex can get married, then its a marriage.  I say make civil unions have all the rights of a traditional “marriage”.  If the LGBT community think that’s still not enough, then its all about semantics and claiming a win for winnings sake.

    • Binary Daoist

      March 27, 2013 at 1:05 pm

@Aazimar Why does religion get exclusivity to marriage? Marriage existed before religion…

      • Aazimar

        March 27, 2013 at 1:15 pm

@Binary Daoist  @Aazimar But why does it matter?  Can you cite specific examples of marriage not having some religious basis?  The family unit existed before marriage and religion, yet we don’t define a family by the traditional sense anymore.  The sticking point is not necessarily that religious groups don’t want homosexuals to share all the same rights that married couples can have, but in the word “marriage” itself.  Ron is correct; create something better than marriage, call it something else, and all parties will be happy.

      • Binary Daoist

        March 27, 2013 at 1:19 pm

@Aazimar I would think that marriage was created out of the result of having children… but I really don’t know.

Receiving the federal/state benefits is the only reason to get married.  Without that incentive, I would think people would forgo marriage.

@ElectricDave  @TemporalGrid The government should have nothing to do with marriage.  The government does, however, have to step in when inequalities are being enforced.

The only way the Federal Government is involved in marriage is our fucking shitty tax code.  Fix the tax code so it doesn’t matter (No more tax benefit if 1 spouse works – and no more tax penalty if both work)  – and the states figure it out.

        March 27, 2013 at 1:33 pm

@OllieInChicago couldn’t agree more. I’m not a Cubs fan, but I do believe there fans deserve at least a WS appearance or a win. Plus, I have Samardj and Rizzo in a keeper fantasy baseball league…pulling hard for them this year and to come.

      • OllieInChicago

        March 27, 2013 at 1:34 pm

@harlequincy Cheers.  I’ve been racking my brain trying to remember who you support, but couldn’t.  I have Rizzo and Castro in my fantasy league this year.  My pitching is stellar: Weaver, King Felix, & Chris Sale.

      • harlequincy

        March 27, 2013 at 1:37 pm

@OllieInChicago Yankee fan, but not the kind who expect them to win year in year out. Baseball is a funny sport that can’t be predicted…balls drop in, skip fair, etc. (sure you know) I’m excited about this year even if the typical cock yankee fan sees the negative. I have King as well…he’s a monster.

      • OllieInChicago

        March 27, 2013 at 1:42 pm

@harlequincy I like the Yanks trading for Vernon Wells at $6M/year.   Safe bet.  I don’t think the Yankees will win the division this year, but I expect them to compete for a Wild Card spot.  Like you said, the game is fickle; one day your shortstop gets to the ball in the hole, the next day he doesn’t.   Sometimes the wind will push a ball foul, or keep a ball in the park.  That’s why it’s my favorite sport.

      • harlequincy

        March 27, 2013 at 1:48 pm

@OllieInChicago 100% on board w/ Wells at that price. He knows the AL east, can be the DH against lefties when people get healthy and is a stop gap for next year when Grandy walks. 84-78 I think the just miss the playoffs, but I’m fired up about them having to play small ball like they did in the late 90’s championship years. And hell yeah, Baseball is the fucking best sport hands down. You either hit a 95 MPH fastball or your don’t…purest definition of sport.

Fez constantly comes on and bitches that nobody recognizes gay rights but not once have I heard him compliment the many Pinellas County (where he is from) cities and towns that now have a domestic partnership registry that allows gay couples, single couples, etc to have hospital visitation, health insurance benefits, make health care decisions and other benefits that traditionaly belong to married couples.

There is also the immigration issue. My lesbian friends just had a baby (sperm donor) and one of them is from England. Her wife can not petition for her to stay in this country, get a green card, get citizenship. Only hetero marriage is considered for the applications. Incredibly unfair. Their child was born here. Yes. My marriage has nothing to do with religion, politics, or finances. I made a commitment to a person to love them for the rest of my life. Was the wedding necessary? No. Was it important to me as a declaration? Yes. It’s self centered and very egotistical to think that the rest of the world needs to know how you feel but part of the narcissism of love is not caring what the rest of the world thinks.

We need to reevaluate the entire tax system of the United States.  Just treat marriage as exactly what it started as: a contract. The origin of marriage was as a biological contract often used for wealth management and treaties, while in the US we no longer think about marriage in that manner legally and logistically regulating based on “love” is idiotic.

Yes, marriage should have nothing to do with the government. If the IRS would treat married couples no different than single people, Gays would have no reason to even want to do something like marriage that already has over a 50% failure rate in this country. Truth is the gov doesn’t even want gays married because there would be less taxes coming in from the gays. It’s all a money bullshit game.

    • OP4

      March 27, 2013 at 1:53 pm

@neilmcculley No.  There would probably be more taxes if gay couples filed jointly.  In a marriage where both people work, the tax bill is significantly higher – learned that one the hard way.

      • neilmcculley

        March 27, 2013 at 2:08 pm

You’re probably right. I still wish the gov got it’s nose out of our lives and let us just live like we want to.

They would then have to figure out dependent care in the case of children. unless that too would be eliminated, the IRS would have to decide which parent claims which kid or do both claim all. this becomes especially messy when parents disagree on who does what in regards to time and resources spend on a shared dependent.

Make Marriage a religious ceremony.  Make the legal benefits tied solely to civil unions.  E.G. no more marriage licences for anybody.  Only a church could marry you.

    • zel

      March 28, 2013 at 6:40 am

@speedscu Or differentiate the two as religious unions and civil unions. Let the word marriage become a communal word in the eyes of the law.

You do know that there are child molesters who are married, right? And that married people who then molest children are not forced to get a divorce?

I don’t think most people get married as a financial move lol If they do, they probably got married for the wrong reasons.  Sure it’s an added benefit but not the sole reason.  It’s a lifelong commitment.
