It’s been over 5 years since the comedy world lost Mike DeStefano. The Bronx comic was a tour-de-force of blunt, creative rage against the day-to-day bullshit that we all deal with. He told it like it was, and his honesty and originality have been sorely missed in the years since his passing. Luckily for us, we’re getting one last dose of DeStefano in the form of Puppies and Heroin, a posthumous album being released by Stand Up! Records, his old label.

DeStefano made his past well known during his act. He was a former heroin addict and, later, a drug counselor who openly joked about the allures and struggles that come with drug addiction. “Don’t do drugs, especially heroin. It feels like oral sex and a puppy licking your face at the same time, so if you don’t like those things, then definitely don’t try it,” he once joked. DeStefano was beloved, not just because of his honesty regarding his own life, but for the way that he confronted the everyday nuances of life that we all have experienced. He was intelligent, crass and brutal, and his fans loved him for it.

Puppies and Heroin promises to deliver just that: DeStefano in his sharpest and most profound form. From addiction, the death of his wife, and cancer to wheelchair sex and racism, DeStefano does not shy away from the sensitive issues; Rather, he confronts them head on with a few colorful words and a smirk.

The material for the album was pulled from his last few performances in Minneapolis, MN in early 2011. DeStefano had starred alongside Jim Norton, Robert Kelly and Rich Vos in the Comedy Central special Comics Anonymous in late 2010 and had just wrapped filming for a Funny or Die sketch only hours before his death; He was still in his prime, and had years of material still ahead of him. While we will never get to see the brilliance that would have come from DeStefano in his later years, we can at least take solace that we’re getting this last little bit of unheard material from him.

Puppies and Heroin dropped today, September 30th, and can be purchased on iTunes, Amazon, and other platforms. Check out one of the album’s tracks, Back and Forth, below:
