Pete Davidson SNL Sketch Starts Twitter “Rape” Outrage

Usually when cast member Pete Davidson has a big spot on Saturday Night Live, Twitter reacts. Pete hits home runs with his Weekend Update commentaries and his appearances in the SNL digital shorts. However, it was Saturday’s live sketch featuring Pete as a Florida (naturally) high school student who had an affair with his teacher that had Twitterers firing off complaints in a 140 characters or less.

The sketch was a parody of HLN coverage of the Tampa trial of a teacher who had been sleeping with one of her students. Pete Davidson as Gavin, the student in the center of the “Hot For Teacher” case who’s testifying in court. He’s not so much testifying as bragging. The defendant played by Cecily Strong blushes and Kenan Thompson as the judge fist bumps Gavin as recounts their sexual relationship calling it the “best day of my life”. The only one horrified in the courtroom is Gavin’s mother played by Kate McKinnon. There’s also Bobby Moynihan as Gavin’s father who’s seen crying, except that it’s tears of joy and pride.

People on Twitter quickly called out SNL for glorifying statutory rape and making jokes about it. Saturday Night Live could always go back to making family friendly ISIS parody spots. It could bring less heat.
