Pete Davidson Says Kid Cudi Saved His Life

SNL’s Pete Davidson, while sitting down for an interview with Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club earlier this week, opened up about his struggles with depression and said that it was rapper Kid Cudi’s music that ultimately helped him step away from the edge.

“He saved my life. I would have killed myself if I didn’t have Kid Cudi,” Davidson told hosts DJ Envy, Angela Yee and Charlamagne Tha God. “If you are 25 or under, I truly believe that Kid Cudi saved your life.”

Davidson didn’t go into too much detail, but said that he’s previously struggled with both depression and suicidal tendencies. For Davidson, listening to Cudi’s music, especially his album Man on the Moon, was therapeutic at a time in his life when things were rough for him.

“I would have killed myself, 100%,” Davidson continued. “I truly believe that if Man on the Moon didn’t come out, I would have killed myself.”

One of the defining features of Kid Cudi’s music is his honesty; the rapper has struggled with depression for many years now, and has opened up about it often in his songs. In fact, he announced earlier this month that he was checking himself into a rehab facility in order to deal with his depression and suicidal urges.

Davidson and Cudi have actually been friends for a few years. As a new addition to the SNL roster, Davidson reached out to Cudi just to express his gratitude for his music, and the two began to hang out. “He’s just a good dude. I told him I was a fan when I got on SNL and he called me and was like ‘Come over, I’ve got a new album!’ He’s just a nice dude,” said Davidson.

He even gave Cudi an early screening of his new stand up special, SMD, which premieres on Comedy Central on October 29th. On that topic, Davidson got a kick out of telling the hosts how the name of the special came to be.

“It’s my dad’s initials, but it really means suck my dick, so the only way I could get the title and the billboard with SMD was to say it’s just my dad’s initials,” he laughed. “And then the network felt really bad and they were like ‘it’s his dad’s initials!’ But basically there’s a billboard of me telling everyone to suck my dick in the middle of Time’s Square.”
