A lot happened in comedy news in 2017- a lot of the news was bad with some hard hitting deaths, and some disturbing career deaths but as always there were also new accomplishments, firsts, and exciting rebirths. Once again, we put together a timeline to highlight the big news stories about those in the comedy world for the year. March 1, 2017 – The Battle of the Trumps begins as Alec Baldwin calls Anthony Atamanuik as “a guy who’s on the Internet” on JKL while discussing if a Trump impersonator should take the President’s place at the WHCD. Alec Baldwin and James Adomian fight on twitter after Baldwin insults “internet Trump impersonators”alluding to Anthony Atamanuik.

March 1, 2017 – It’s announced Bobby Moynihan has signed to star in a CBS sitcom signaling the end of his 9 year SNL run

March 2, 2017 – Pete Davidson Admits to having a drug problem and spending time in rehab.

March 5, 2017 – After two years of retirement, David Letterman steps out of his low profile life to give an in-depth interview with Vulture where he talks about comedy being a defense against President Trump

March 6, 2017 – Dave Chappelle surprises other residents when he shows up at the Yellow Springs, Ohio town council meeting to advocate more progressive police policies

March 22, 2017 – The Carmichael Show makes the news by taking on the N-word head-on using it 6 times in one episode. Jerrod Carmichael calls the word “childish”

March 22, 2017 – The Comedy Jam, the TV version of The Goddamn Comedy Jam, the brainchild of Josh Adam Meyers premieres on Comedy Central

March 24, 2017 – Adam Sandler signs on to do four more comedy films for Netflix, extending his original four picture deal with the streamer from 2014

April 6, 2017 – The world loses one of the greatest comedians of all time, Don Rickles, at age 90

April 10, 2017 – Ian Abramson makes his late night television debut on Conan while wearing a doggie shock collar

April 12, 2017 – A plagiarism controversy ensues between Tig Notaro and Louis CK who appeared in an SNL birthday clown short which could easily be compared to Tig’s earlier work

April 12, 2017 – Charlie Murphy dies at age of 57.

April 20, 2017 – World premiere of Neil Berkeley’s documentary “Gilbert” featuring Gilbert Gottfried at the Tribeca Film Festival

April 21, 2017 – Brad Wenzel makes his national television stand up debut on Conan
