Not Enough Room in the Lifeboat: Comedy Legends

lifeboatThe Ship is Sinking and There’s Only Room For 3…

Just imagine. Four  legends of stand up comedy are all on one ship. But oh shit, the ship is sinking and Richard Pryor, , Eddie Murphy and are about to go down with it. Thank goodness there’s a lifeboat, but there’s only room for three of them. Which black comedy legend doesn’t get a seat?

Who the fuck put Chris Rock in contention over Bernie Mac/Redd Foxx/Robin Harris?

Carlin, Robin Williams, Steve Martin, & Jerry Seinfeld.

Chris Rock just because he continues to try and act.

Referring to president of US as your daddy is just too edgy for me.  Rock goes overboard and I hope he sinks like one.

I had to go with Murphy.  I still love Raw and Delirious to this day, but  I haven't found him funny in a quite the long time.

Pryor is untouchable.

Chris Rock's early specials are all-time classics (Bring The Pain especially) and even though he uses other comics as writers, he can't be bounced.

Eddie Murphy's body of work, although its less extensive than the others has stood the test of time tremendously. Raw and Delirious still has me laughing to the point of tears, and I've seen both countless times.

I'm bouncing Cosby.  Yes, he's a pioneer.  But his standup just doesn't hold up.  I also don't like comics who pride themselves on being clean and try to push their agenda on other people.  Peace out, Bill.

does anyone remember anything from Rock besides the "5,000 dollars a bullet" bit? Cause that's all I and anyone I've ever met remember.

I know I'm probably in the minority here...but I just don't find Richard Pryor that funny. Influential, sure, I get that...but just not funny to me.

Sorry bill. You told Eddie not to curse, to quote Richard, "Have a Coke, and a smile, and shut the fuck up." Into the water.

Based on Stand-up, only.  They've all made bad movies and bad TV.  Stand-up only.

Anyone who says it's easy to throw Bill Cosby in doesn't understand comedy history...

Murphy is the only one who didn't give a shit about stand-up after he attained celebrity status. Not to mention that of all their acts, as funny as Murphy was he never had the level of insight or genius that Cosby, Pryor or Rock had. He just did funny voices and acted crazy like Robin Williams--where's the substance or social commentary in that?

Maybrick

On pure stand up ability ONLY.. Chris Rock is nowhere near the other 3 comics.

Sorry Ronnie B. is just not so.

Tell me ONE joke Chris Rock ever told with a "normal" voice. His whole gimmick is his loud over the top black gruff voice. Not saying it never made me laugh. But call it what it is, It's a gimmick. Couldn't tell a joke/concept WITHOUT the crazy "black" voice to save his life. The ONLY reason why people think he's funny.

Sucks as as an actor to boot.

Chris Rock drowns.

Bill Cosby's album, "Wonderfullness" was the reason I idolized comics as a child.

Everyone I have ever known who has had any interaction with Cosby, has insisted that he is a true Doucebag. I had dinner next to Eddie Murphy once and he was so incredibly nice. He was so funny without being trying to be the center of attention. He left before my friend and I left, and when we asked for the check, the waiter said, "Mr. Murphy took care of it. He said it was a pleasure meeting you both." PLUS, he left a FAT tip, because I asked the waiter if we should a least take care of the gratuity. The waiter laughed. He said, "Ladies, he paid my rent for a month." And this was NYC!!! Rock & Pryor, literally (not figuratively) make me piddle my pants!!
