New Head of Comedy at ABC

jamila-hunter

ABC boosted Jamila Hunter to the role of senior vice president of comedy with the responsibility of overseeing development and the production of all pilots.

In Hunter’s five year career as vice president of comedy, she’s worked on a wave of successful family sitcoms starring families of color, like “Black-ish” and “Fresh Off The Boat”. However this latest promotion adds the development of short-form content for the network’s app to Hunter’s purview, as well as the management of marketing and launching digital series. Hunter has also worked as Vice President of Development and Production at Bravo (rebranding the channel and launching shows like “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” and “Project Runway”) and Vice President of Comedy Development for 20th Century Fox Television in 2005. All of these aforementioned shows promoted marginalized groups to a more mainstream market with great success.

Hunter’s predecessor to the ABC executive position is Samie Kim Falvey, who left the network in August to head AwesomenessTV as Chief Content Officer. While AwesomenessTV and Verizon’s newest streaming service have yet to announce new projects under Falvey, the company’s appeal to a young audience makes it likely (and hopeful) that Falvey will continue this legacy of representing underrepresented groups. It’s fitting that during a zeitgeist of increased diversity in comedy, one very successful woman of color would replace another to manage some of the nation’s most widely watched comedy content.
