Banksy’s breathtaking month long residency in New York City is the subject of a new HBO documentary, “Banksy Does New York”.

Directed by Chris Moukarbel, Banksy Does New York culls together fan-generated footage of the murals, sculptures and performances art pieces that the reclusive artist posted throughout the five boroughs that fascinated residents and frustrated the graffiti police. ‘I crowd-sourced footage that New Yorkers posted online each day of the month’, explains Moukarbel. ‘It was about a city holding a mirror back up to the artist’.

Banksy is a street artist, activist, painter and film maker best known for his subversive, satirical, political brand of art, usually posted in and around England. His film Exit Through The Gift Shop was met with universal acclaim and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

For HBO, this film falls right into what their critically acclaimed documentary series are all about. ‘From the moment Banksy took over the streets, New Yorkers became obsessed’ says HBO Documentary Films President Sheila Nevins. ‘The film captures this month of madness created by user-generated footage’.

Banksy Does New York will debut on HBO on November 17th.
