New Amy Sedaris Project Coming to Television
Amy Sedaris’ new truTV project is going to be a show about the comedian doing the stuff she likes doing anyway. The terrific character actress will host a silly variety/talk show on housekeeping with each episode fitting into a general category, like “Wood!”, “Fish!” or “Grieving!”. The upcoming project presumably takes inspiration from Sedaris’ past books, “I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence” and “Simple Times: Crafts for Poor People”. Sedaris also said she’s “been doing this show in my head for years”; it’s an obvious extension of herself.
The untitled show sounds reminiscent of how old-school Patton Oswalt came into his own stand up-wise by talking about the nerdy shit he loves; just a very talented comedian building worlds around the stuff they geek out on anyway. This kind of enthusiasm for niche comedy is indicative of what a bubble in comedic development we’re currently living in; there’s an audience for everything and untapped audiences in genre-bending. Audiences that may not typically gravitate towards comedy get brought in by the HDTV-ish premise and stay for Sedaris’ comedic talents and fans of Sedaris that aren’t hankering for a craft to learn, get turned on to homey activities. It’s just a beautiful orgy of hobbies and comedy.
