Netflix Acquires Ricky Gervais’ ‘The Office’ Follow-Up Film

In early April, everybody’s favorite cheeky Brit, Ricky Gervais, released the first teaser trailer to his The Office follow-up film, called David Brent: Life on the Road. Since then, not much has come out about the film, until today. During an appearance this morning on SiriusXM’s Opie with Jim Norton Show, Gervais revealed that Netflix had acquired the worldwide distribution rights to David Brent.

“This is exciting news and this is top secret, so I’m going to say it now. Netflix has bought out the rest of the world again,” Gervais told Opie and an incredulous Norton. “Which is great for me, because I’d rather 20 million people see it than half a million people see it in cinemas, do you know what I mean? Because I want to do tours off the back of it. So for me, it’s great.”

Filmed as a mockumentary in the same style as The Office, David Brent: Life on the Road follows The Office star David Brent 12 years after the events of the original show. Brent works as a traveling salesman as he attempts to self-finance a tour for his band, Foregone Conclusion. Brent is under the impression that the film crew following him is shooting a rock-and-roll documentary a la Martin Scorsese’s film featuring the Rolling Stones, Shine a Light, when in reality they’re actually filming a “Where Are They Now?” style doc to see what kind of trainwreck the notoriously incompetent boss has become.

Entertainment One and the BBC, who both financed the film, will handle the film’s distribution in the UK, New Zealand and Australia, while Netflix will handle worldwide distribution. The film will be released in theaters across the UK on August 19th, with distribution from Netflix coming at a later date.
