What Did You Miss on Saturday Night Live This Week? Tina Fey Brings Out Stars, Trump Orders for the Table, and Weekend Update Shares Jokes Too Offensive For TV

Saturday Night Live put a bow on its 43rd season last night, with Tina Fey in the host seat.  Big stars turned out for the last episode of the season- between the cold open and the monologue, the list of cameos included Robert DeNiro, Ben Stiller, Jerry Seinfeld, Donald Glover, Alec Baldwin, Lin Manuel Miranda, Fred Armisen, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chris Rock, Anne Hathaway, and Tracy Morgan.

The cold open smashed politics with nostalgic pop culture as the Trump verse entered the Soprano zone.  Recreating the last scene of the last episode of HBO’s the Sopranos, were Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump, Kate McKinnon as Rudy Giuliani, Ben Stiller playing Michael Cohen,  and Trump’s sons played by Mikey Day and Alex Moffat (who was outside parallel parking his big wheel).  Robert De Niro showed up as  Tony’s hallucination of Robert Mueller. Is he there? Or isn’t he?

Tina Fey, hosting for her sixth time, chose an audience Q&A for her monologue, but the audience was filled with celebrity questions including Jerry Seinfeld who wanted to know why he’s never been asked to play a character on the show.  Benedict Cumberbatch had some questions about Kenan Thompson, Chris Rock, Robert De Niro, Fred Armisen, and Anne Hathaway, asked questions, Donald Glover returned to get his hat back that he left in the dressing room, and the monologue ended with Tracy Morgan joining Fey on stage to wish her a happy birthday.

Weekend Update was full of show highlights this week including a very funny play on the Laurel-Yanni excitement, and Che and Jost announced that since it was their last show of the season, they wanted to run a few jokes that would normally be deemed too offensive to run on the air. Jump to 1:40 to hear the jokes about the boy scouts decision to accept girls, a Texas restaurant using photos of Bruce and Caitlyn to depict bathroom gender, a one-armed woman who robbed a bank, a pornhub joke, and a joke about marijuana laws that definitely wouldn’t go over well if Colin told the joke.

The funniest bit of the night was a digital short called Chicago Improv.  Tina Fey, Alex Moffat, Melissa Villaseñor, Mikey Day, Luke Null, and Chris Redd star as a comedy troupe at the center of the newest Dick Wolf series.  Unflinching. Chicago Improv.

The talent show bit focuses on high school seniors showing off their talents. Melissa Villasenor is “Scissors” a teen who teams up with her mom to perform the mother-daughter routine they did for her first grade talent show to the tune of Girls Just Want to Have Fun, but Villasenor has changed a bit since first grade. Consistently selling any bit she’s in, Villasenor is hilarious as “Scissors.” Congratulations to Melissa for ending a killer season with another stand out performance.

If you have time to watch one more sketch from the season finale, make it this clip of  Tina Fey as Sarah Palin. Always great even if some of you have forgotten who Sarah Palin is.
