Miraculously Back To Life: Hollywood’s Most Tired Plot Device

who died

Who died!?  Nobody!  With the recent barrage of reboots and comic book inspired movies, you’d think that Hollywood would at least change up the goings on around the explosions and spaceships. But the same thing happens all of the time now in blockbusters.  One plot device that is getting particularly tired, is the miraculous return of a major character soon after  their dramatic death scene. Here are some of the recent culprits with spoiler alerts galore.

DEATH THOR

Thor (Thor): Thor’s powers come from his might hammer called Mjolnir, which is stripped from him after he disobeys his father’s orders and is sent to Earth where he lands in New Mexico. When the evil Loki sends the Destroyer to kill Thor, he offers himself as a sacrifice to spare the destroyer from killing the other warriors. This sacrifice satisfies god knows who and suddenly, big suprise!  His hammer and powers return to him. Even when your about to be killed by an indestructible being in the Marvel universe, you can still stay alive as long as you’re a good dude. Watch Thor’s big death and redemption moment on YouTube.

DEATH PEPPER POTTS

Pepper Potts (Iron Man 3): The horribly named character of Pepper Potts played by Gwyneth Paltrow somehow survived the first two films in the Iron Man series and went into the third film feeling great. The CEO of Stark Industries and the love interest of Iron Man himself, Pepper wasn’t exactly a fan favorite until she met her untimely demise at the hands of Aldrich Killian while falling from a platform into a giant ball of fire. That is until she reappears due to her extremis powers she gained earlier in the film. If Gwyneth Paltrow can literally disintegrate in an explosion and still survive, she’ll live forever.  Watch Pepper Potts sad death, in this YouTube clip.

DEATH LOKI

Loki (Thor 2): Despite the jam-packed casts of the Marvel movies, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki character quickly became a fan favorite due to his characters evil nature combined with Hiddleston’s off-screen charm. So it came as a major surprise when he decided to sacrifice himself as he is stabbed through the chest while attempting to kill Algrim. However, Loki comes back at the end with the power of magic as Anthony Hopkins Odin character transforms into a smiling Loki. Parents making up a bedtime story on the spot could have come up better twist than that.  Watch Loki take a dive in Thor 2 in this clip.

DEATH NICK FURY

Nick Fury (Captain America: The Winter Soldier): Captain America: The Winter Soldier featured the return of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury character that is scheduled to appear what seems life 500 Marvel movies. So when he met his demise at the hands of the evil Hydra, it caused audiences worldwide to start the worlds largest collective eye roll. The twist of Fury faking his own death could be seen from a mile away and gave us yet another character who didn’t really die. Plus, if Samuel L. Jackson does get killed, it will be in an awesome slow-motion fight, and not on an operating table.  Here’s things looking grim for Nick Fury.

DEATH BUCKY BARNES 2

Bucky Barnes (Captain America: The Winter Soldier): Nick fury wasn’t the only one who didn’t really die in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. If you recall in the first Captain America, Steve Rodgers best friend and fellow soldier Bucky Barnes is killed when he falls from a train into the snowy mountains below while on a mission. This destroys Captain America inside, but don’t worry, he comes back in the sequel as the Winter Soldier when Hydra manages to save him and give him a super bionic arm. Because when you fall off a cliff and land on your arm, that’s the only thing that gets hurt. Don’t worry about there being any actual important moments in character development, anyone that dies will just be brought back whether you like it or not.  Watch Bucky Barnes hit the snow or just watch this weird musical tribute to BB.

DEATH PHIL COULSON

Agent Coulson (The Avengers): Agent Coulson is the only death that seems to make sense in the Marvel world because he is a non-superhero and won’t survive a smash through a brick wall. Coulson is killed in The Avengers after being stabbed by Loki and dying a dramatic death as you can have. He doesn’t even come back in the movie, which makes it seem like Marvel is done with their old tricks. But Agent Coulson miraculously appears in the TV show, Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D.and claims that he was resuscitated and sent to recover in Tahiti so his death could motivate the Avengers. Does Marvel not know what dead means? As in you can’t be resuscitated. It’s like one kid claiming he has a force field around him during a game of cops and robbers.  Watch Coulson’s seemingly final death scene.

DEATH KIRK

Captain Kirk (Star Trek Into Darkness): Captain Kirk is Star Trek. Without Captain Kirk, you can’t have the Enterprise and all of it’s adventures. So when Kirk sacrifices himself to save the ship by going into the radioactive chamber to realign the warp core and dies in the process. This was a drawn out death and made it seem like the end of the franchise. But noooo, they had to go and ruin it. It turns out the villain, Khan, has blood that contains regenerative properties that save Kirk after he is captured. What’s next, Kirk and Spock are tied up before being saved by a mouse who chews through the rope? You better not pull this shit in the new Star Wars films JJ.  Watch Kirk die right before your eyes in this dramatic scene.
