Michelle Wolf Will Helm This Years White House Correspondents Dinner

Another Daily Show correspondent has been chosen to host the White House Correspondents Dinner. Michelle Wolf has been chosen to host this year’s more-than-likely-Trumpless event.

Wolf is a perfect choice to host, she has been very outspoken (and very funny) with her criticism of the Commander in Chief, and she’s at the perfect point in her career- and the timing is right to have a woman host. Prior female hosts have included former SNL Weekend Update anchor Cecily Strong, Wanda Sykes, Elayne Boosler, and Paula Poundstone. Wolf will become the fifth.

“I’m delighted to announce ‘Nice Lady’ Michelle Wolf as our featured entertainer this year,” Margaret Talev, president of the White House Correspondents’ Association announced. “Our dinner honors the First Amendment and strong, independent journalism. Her embrace of these values and her truth-to-power style make her a great friend to the WHCA. Her Pennsylvania roots, stints on Wall Street and in science and self-made, feminist edge make her the right voice now,” Talev added.

Wolf has been a part of the Late Night with Seth Meyers team, and subsequently joined the Daily Show before announcing that she would helm her own Late Night Talk Show for Netflix later this year.

Last year The Daily Show’s Hasan Minhaj hosted the event. Larry Willmore hosted in 2016, Cecily Strong in 2015, Joel McHale, Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Kimmel hosted the years before.

The annual dinner/roast of the President and the press corp that covers his daily activity is always controversial but usually thought of as a fun event. Last year Trump announced he wouldn’t be attending and although he’s made no statements about this year’s event, nobody is expecting to see him at this year’s event. Trump took a beating at the event in 2011 when host Seth Meyers and then-President Obama took shots at him, with many believing it was that beating that inspired him to run for office.

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner will take place April 29th. You can watch coverage of the dinner on C-SPAN.
