For the show’s 40th season, there will be a new person sitting at Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update desk. Michael Che will begin co-anchoring the SNL news segment along with Colin Jost.

Che who wrote for Saturday Night Live last season, can currently be seen as a correspondent on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart on Comedy Central. He just made his Daily Show debut this past June.

He replaces Cecily Strong at the SNL anchor desk. According to the New York Times, executive producer Lorne Michaels says she will stay on as a regular cast member. Che’s co-anchor Colin Jost just recently inherited the Weekend Update gig from Seth Meyers. Jost started doing WU in March of this year.

Lorne Michaels said the team of Che and Jost came about through trial and error. He said the show went through “a number of different combinations” before deciding on this one. He also had this to say about his new anchorman. “Michael is a strong writer, and he’s really funny. It’s always difficult to make changes and make ‘Update’ different from what’s gone before.”

Even though it’s a difficult move, Michaels feels the time is right. “This is about a new era, what feels appropriate for now.”

This will be the first time in the 40 year history of Saturday Night Live that Weekend Update has had two male anchors.
