Melissa McCarthy Shares Ghostbusters FX Secrets

Melissa McCarthy dropped by Conan last night to tell tales of three generations of McCarthys; her squirrel-catching father, her children who play with every other Ghostbusters action figure except the one of her, and herself as a little girl when she was certain her parents had never had sex.

She delved into how her father’s habit of trapping the squirrels from his roof and transporting them to a park has made him “officially a crazy old man”. Her dad reassured her “my friend is doing it with me”, but obviously that’s only worse. Andy Richter worried McCarthy Sr. is splitting up squirrel families and their children are asking “Why did daddy go to the park?” and “Who will bring us acorns?” McCarthy also shared the heavy squirrel themes in the room she’s redecorating as the grandparents’ room, so hopefully her dad won’t see this episode of his child on national TV.

McCarthy also exposed the fancy FX work going on behind the scenes of “Ghostbusters” that allowed her to turn her head a full 360 degrees while she was possessed by a demon. That secret, back boobs ladies and gentleman. With prosthetic breasts, McCarthy could mime the action with two 180 rotations. Some of her fellow cast members were handsy with the fakes. Other effects were for real. Specifically, the slime. Kristen Wiig kept getting slimed and “Leslie grabbed her by the scruff of the neck… and used her like a human shield… It’s in the movie.” Hollywood magic can’t compare with seeing your friend get slimed again and again and again and again.
